Hello. I know this is an old issue, but for those who are still interested, here's what worked for me.

Go to Preferences>File Handling and make sure that Vesion Cue is enabled.

If I disable it, when opening a file from the File>Open menu, Photoshop crashes.

When Version Cue is enabled, Photoshop opens files without a problem.

Hello. I know this is a very old post and chances are no one is using CS3 anymore, but for those who are interested…

Go to Preferences and under File Handling make sure that Version Cue is enabled.

    It worked for me.

If I disable it, photoshop crashes when I try to open any file.

    Hope it helps

I am on CS3 and I am having the same issue.

I cannot get PS to open a file and have done all in this list.  I don't think the TWAIN is an issue but that is the one thing I do not know how to look for...

I need PS to work and have lost a client with this problem.  Adobe will not support it and told me to buy CS5.  I have so little money or I would have it already...

I need this program to make money.  It worked one day and poof not the next.  I do remember an Adobe update happening in Camera RAW I think it was.  I had postponed the update till I was done with a project.  After I was done i installed it before starting a new project the next week.  When I went in to start that I could not open a file and have been stuck since...

Any new ideas will save my life and business if the fix it!

3 full uninstalls and reinstalls have been done now.  I was told that would reset everything and get me running but it has not..

Thank you for listening and for any help..

Open AND New?  Then most likely the cause is your default printer driver.

Also, of course, make sure you have all the updates installed.

    Chris,

Yes on both. I can change the printer in OS pref and it makes no change. Is there a place in PS to do that? I have not found it. Won't let me look at print or page properties with no file open.

    Thanks,

Also in CS3?  This thread is about CS3 crashing.

If you are on CS3, please give details about your setup.  If you are on a different version, please start a new thread.

Thanks for the post. Switching the default printer appears to

    have solved the problem.

Does it crash when you hit command-N, or after you OK the dialog?

Try changing your default printer to something else.

(the printer data is initialized when a document is created)

It will load completely. It will load just fine, and can sit idle with no

issues, as soon as I try FILE>NEW or FILE>OPEN, or go to a psd/jpg file and

click to open with photoshop, the file will load and then crash.

    Isaac,

Any kind of file? Files with fonts? Did you do any maintenance? Did you change anything on your system (hardware/software/OS)? Are these files with fonts? Did you check for font corruption or duplication?

How much scratch disc space do you have? How much file storage space?

Please get back to us. Thanks!

    Thanks for your reply back,

Any file type crashes. As soon as I click New File, it crashes...doesn't

    matter what type of file.

Opening any and all file types, PSD, JPEGS, etc, it crashes immediately.

I just updated to Photoshop 10.0.1 five minutes ago, and still crashes.

I haven't done any main maintenance or changes to OS. I keep my system

    updated.

I have over 100GB of free space...I'm not sure where to check scratch space.

It's worked fine last on Saturday, shut down as normal, no issues. Tried to

    use it on Sunday,

    and began crashing ever since.

I'm pretty good with figuring out stuff, but I'm not familiar with doing an

A&I of the system...please explain how.

    Thanks

Boot from the system install disk for the computer.

A&I = Archive and Install, this will keep all your apps and settings but will give you a fresh system and user account.

go through the install from the booted system install disk. and when you get to choose disk it will caution you, at this point click on options and choose Archive and install.

I hope this gets you back on track
