Photoshop CS5 crashing on image resize in Windows 10

I have been running in CS5 on my Windows 10 machine for years with no problems, but just recently it's been crashing anytime I

  1. try to resize either the image or the canvas -- the dialog box doesn't appear, the Bridge and Minibridge icons go gray, and the program freezes;
  2. try to save an altered file -- the Bridge icons again go gray and the file is not created;
  3. try to save an unchanged duplicated file -- the Bridge icons go gray and the file is supposedly created, but the file does not appear; if I try to again to save that unchanged duplicated file, I get this dialog box: JPEG Options. Could not build a preview because of a program error;
  4. try to save a changed duplicated file -- the Bridge icons go gray and the file is supposedly created, but the file does not appear; the options to again Save the file are grayed out, and I am unable to unfreeze the program.

I can sometimes unfreeze the program and restore the Bridge icons by hitting Ctrl+Shft+Pause, but not always.

Photoshop CS5, display drivers, and Windows are all up to date.

Any ideas?

I would reset the photoshop cs5 preferences by pressing and holding down Shift+Ctrl+Alt just after starting the launch of photoshop cs5. (you have to be quick about holding the keys down or you won't get the below dialog)

Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File?

Press Yes

Hi there,

Sorry to hear that Photoshop CS5 is crashing on Windows 10, could you check for any pending operating system updates and try installing them to see if it helps with the issue?

Also, try updating the graphics drivers from the manufacturer's website and see how it goes.

Regards,
Sahil

I am running PS 5 on Win 7 and for the first time encountered this problem when I crop. The crop tool switched to the point sampler and then PS and the Dell/Win 7 system locks up. I have to restart the computer.

I tried to copy an error meesage related to a memory file location problem..I think it said...

I have gone into the user/temp folder to clean the cache and that doesn't do anything.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

When I said in my original post, "Photoshop CS5, display drivers, and Windows are all up to date", I meant that all Windows updates have already been made and that all graphics drivers (from the manufacturer's sites) and monitor drivers are already up to date.
