Photoshop CS5 Error - Preferences Deleted

Yesterday my Photoshop was behaving glitchy. I was able to work around and save my file. Upon closing Photoshop, I received a message that said the Preferences were not saved. Thinking it was only for that session, I said Okay. Later when I tried to open PS again, it was "unable to initialize the Preferences" because they have been deleted. ?????? And PS could not open. HELP!

Hi

The Preference file ought to get recreated when it gets delelted. Try again. If it fails try this for CS5:

  1. Quit PS
  2. Hover three fingers over Ctrl+Alt+Shift
  3. Launch PS
  4. Press and hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift. You will get an alert about deleting preferences. Click yes.
  5. Note that you have 1/10 of a second between steps 2&3. If you don't get the alert, try again

If you are on a Mac, hold Cmd+Opt+Shift+Ctrl first, then launch PS from the Dock and don't worry about the timing..

OMG! That worked!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! Now, do I have to do anything in Preferences or Settings so that this doesn't happen again? THANKS (bowing and kissing your feet!).

Hi Kim

You're welcome, and I'm glad it's working! As to keep it from happening again you mentioned a message about not enough disk space. If you get that again, can you share a screen shot? Photoshop needs a lot of free space to work or it won't open. Most people have a dedicated scratch disk for this purpose. Here's the Help fie:

What operating system do you have? What do you mean by glitchy? Have you had problems before?

I work on MacOS Sierra, version 10.12.6 - Photoshop CS5.

While working in PS, I kept getting messages that there wasn’t enough disc space to perform that task (copying & pasting, duplicating an object). If I tried it again, it would work. I was able to perform everything I wanted to and saved the file with no apparent problem.

Does that answer your questions? If not, please feel free to contact me again. Thanks for your help.
