Photoshop CS6 Crashes when printing

Starting a few weeks ago Photoshop CS6 crashes every time when selecting the print command with the error : "Adobe Photoshop CS6 has stopped working"

This happens using different printers and when printing anything, including a blank page.  Printing works fine from other applications.

Running Photoshop CS6 v.13.1.2 x32 on Windows 7 Professional 64bit

This is a Dell Optiplex 990, I7 3.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD system, AMD ATI RADEON HD 6350 PCIe Video Card on a 16x bus

1) Photoshop has been updated

2) OS has been updated

3) Video drivers have been updated with new ones from the manufacturer

4) I tried new drivers for our Kyocera TaskAlfa 3550ci

5) I tried new drivers for our Kyocera FS-3140MFP

6) I also tried removing all of the printers except "Adobe PDF" printer

Here is an example event from the Windows Application Log after photoshop crashed.

Faulting application name: Photoshop.exe, version: 13.1.2.0, time stamp: 0x50e86403

Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17725, time stamp: 0x4ec49b60

Exception code: 0xc0000374

Fault offset: 0x000c380b

Faulting process id: 0xa0c

Faulting application start time: 0x01ce355706f614ca

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Photoshop.exe

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll

Report Id: 4fd602eb-a14c-11e2-b31d-180373d687c0

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide.

Our current workaround is saving a jpeg and then printing with another paint application.

Any assistance is much appreciated.

thank you

This seems printer driver specific. Did you try updating printer drivers from its manufacturer website recently. If it's already updated and still crashing then please follow these steps:

    Remove a printer

    1. Click the "Start" button, type PRINTER in the search box and press Enter.

    2. Find the icons of installed printers, and delete them.

    3. Right-click on the blank part of the window, and choose "Run as administrator"->"Server Properties".

    4. On the Drivers tab, select the listed printers and click the Remove button. Please then select Remove driver and driver package.

    5. Open Start menu, input APPWIZ.CPL in the Search box and press ENTER to launch "Programs and Features".

    6. Try to remove all related printer software.

If the issue is not resolved, I suggest that you clear the printing sub system.

    Step 1

    ======

Start Windows Explorer, and then rename all files and folders in the following two folders:

    c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86

To rename a file, we can right click the file and select Rename.

    Step 2

    ======

    1. Click Start, type REGEDIT in the Start Search Bar, and then press ENTER.

    2. Navigate to and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Windows NT x86

View the list of subkeys. There should be only the following subkeys:

    Drivers

    Print Processors

If there are any keys other than those listed above, follow these steps:

    a. On the File menu, click Export.

    b. In the File Name box, type a descriptive name for this key -- for example, type WindowsNTx86regkey -- and then click Save to save it to your local Desktop.

We can use this backup of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Windows NT x86 registry key to restore the key if you experience any problems after you complete this procedure.

    c. Delete all keys other than Drivers and Print Processors.

    Step 3

    ======

Navigate to and click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors registry key. View the list of subkeys. There should be only the following subkeys:

    BJ Language Monitor

    Local Port

    Microsoft Document Imaging Writer Monitor

    Microsoft Shared Fax Monitor

    Standard TCP/IP Port

    USB Monitor

    WSD Port

If there are any keys other than those listed in above, follow these steps to delete them:

    a. On the File menu, click Export.

    b. In the File Name box, type a descriptive name for this key -- for example, type Monitorsregkey -- and then click Save to save it to your local Desktop.

We can use this backup of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors registry key to restore the key if you experience any problems after you complete this procedure.

    c. Delete all keys other than the 5 listed above.

Step 4. Disconnect the printer cable from the computer, and then restart the computer.

Step 5. Reconnect the printer cable to the computer, install the printer according to the manufacturer's installation instructions, and then check if the issue persists.

The actions Adobe suggests (removing the printer, reinstalling) work, but I have to do it every time I want to print. This is ridiculous, is there a permanent fix to this?

Suggested solution works fine for me. .

The crash is due to a corrupted preferences file in Photoshop.

You can either uninstall PS including your preferences or you can make PS recreate a new preferences file.

This can be done by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift immediately after starting PS.A pop up window wil appear asking you whether you want to recreate your preferences file. Click Yes and problem solved.

Curiously PS seems to have this issue since the 2015 version....

    Go figure....

I'm having the same issue, I can't believe the only solution that makes sense it this one, but it requires me doing way more work then I'm willing to do. We pay monthly for photoshop to work, CS6 is working perfectly on the old machine but this new machine that cost more per month requires me to be a computer programmer to fix a simple print issue. Really I'm just sad this hasn't been resolved in an update, I'm clearly not the only person going through the same issue. Please tell me there's an easier way to fix this other than:

Just reading this gives me a headache. Does this really sound like something I should do for a program that should just work. I'm trying to print, not launch a satellite. Before the update I was printing just fine, I thought having the latest photoshop would be beneficial not a cluster of problems.

There is an easier fix to this than all that was suggested above.  I've had this happen several times.

If you create a new document with same specs as your document or image you want to print, then copy all layers to the new document, close the old document, then print the newly created one, not only will it work, but something clears itself so the problem will go away even with the original file.

Deleting the PS preference file does it for me.

I've been seeing this problem for a couple of years and it is not driver related. I’ve seen it on at least 3 different PCs, two laptops and one desktop and on two different brands of printer, Ricoh and Epson and 6 different models, Epson 4015 and B1100, Ricoh 3110, 3300, 7000 and 7100.

Simply deleting the PS preference file which fixes it for me tells me it is PS.

And when you've got a lot of settings in the drivers uninstalling and reinstalling everything isn't really a solution.

Deleting the prefs file worked for me.  Rebuilding photoshop preferences is much easier than cleaning out printer drivers and settings.

That looks to be for Mac. We are on Windows. Also, that link pertains to InDesign and Illustrator, not Photoshop.

Having this same problem, starting today. It just seems to be one particular file, for me. It has many layers. Flattening image gives a different error, but still doesn't allow me to print. I have the same file in my Windows error log: Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll

We're on networked printers here, so I don't know that I can do much with them.

Don't want to rebuild the file!

This same problem occured to me today with a multi layered PSD file (which was recovered after the crash caused by attempting to print it)

I have three printers connected to the system and yesterday I could print from CS6 no problem. I did some research, but couldn't really find anything useful, other than CS6 retaining some data on last used printer.

I did manually purge the print spooler for the Mitsi yesterday and I thought that might be a contributory factor. I reconnected the printer and successfully printed a photo via LR4. I then tried to print the multi layered PSD file in CS6, but it crashed again. I then retried printing from CS6 with a different file (a PDF file) and that was successful. I flattened the multi layer file that had previously failed and successfully printed that from CS6. I then rolled back to have multi layers opened again (on the multi layer file) and tried printing that, and that too, was successful.

Basically it now works, although I could not state for certain what caused it (maybe purging the print q?). It is possible that by reconnecting the printer and printing thru LR4 to the same printer that I last printed fixed the problem - maybe there is a common Abobe print module?

    Good luck with it.
