Photoshop CS6 Extended - system requirements

I have the chance to buy the student version but tried the 30 day trial first, however it kept crashing, it has now expired without me finding a solution. I have now uninstalled it. I was told my specs are above the minimum required to run it but I'm not so sure as I have no idea what the processor types and graphic card types actually mean. I would really like to buy it but have to be sure of exactly what it will take to run it and be stable. Here are my current specs:

Acer Aspire 7741G 64 bit

Intel Core i3-350M Processor (2.26 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)

ATI Mobility Radeon HD5470. Up to 2234MB HyperMemory

17.3" HD LED LCD

4GB DDR3 Memory

320 GB HDD (88GB Free)

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium

CS6 really likes to run in 64 bit mode with a min. of 8 gigs of ram.    For 3D best to have min. of 512 g VRAM.  Your HD is really small.  You should have 10-20% free space, so you only have about 20-40 gigs to play with.  Not enough for any serious image work.  THis and RAM was probably downfall.

Also, the GPU acceleration and 3D facilities are VERY sensitive to the display driver version installed.  What version do you have?

I have now upgraded from 4Gb RAM to 8Gb and freed up more than 100 more Gb of disk space and gone ahead and bought the Photoshop CS6 Extended. However, it is still crashing when using things like liquify or 3D so obviously I need to avoid those but the biggest problem is that it crashes every single time I exit the programme! I have tried Close from the file menu, Exit and just simply clicking the X up in the top right but every time I get the .. Adobe Photoshop CS6 has stopped working.... This is what it says..

That is you video card driver.

Can you launch Ps and then go to Help> System Info.. then copy/paste the text into a reply?

I'm not sure what the latest version driver is available for your Acer, but we have problems with the current desktop ATI 12.10 drivers.

For the benefit of others considering purchasing a laptop...

The problem in this thread is one of the reasons using a laptop for Photoshop work isn't a good idea - laptop vendors generally require you to get display drivers for their mobile chipsets only through them, and most laptop vendors simply don't support their hardware for very long after the sale.

For example, ATI continues to release brand new 2012 drivers available for Radeon HD 5xxx series chipsets (such as are put in desktop video cards), while Acer clearly hasn't made any of their new versions available for this Aspire 7741G laptop since late 2010.

Adobe Photoshop, on the other hand, requires quite a lot from the display driver, in support of the GPU, and only quite recent drivers provide acceptable operation.

Device manager says  my current driver is already up to date but I installed this one manually anyway but it must be older because it was giving me a maximum screen resolution of much less than what I already had (1600 x 900). I've had to uninstall it.

So, it seems I have purchased a product that doesn't work properly on my laptop and is not a good idea for laptops in general, I wish I had I known that before buying PS. The problem is that I really need it on a laptop since I need to use it when outside my home

Are there no (Windows) laptops at all that are suitable?

New ones might work better.  The issue is that the display driver writers have only recently begun to treat the OpenGL and GPU acceleration subsystems seriously enough to be used for professional work (their prime impetus is to support games, which is where all the money is).

Nothing says you can't ask Acer to push another, recent ATI driver through their approval process and make it available for your model.  You might mention the bad press Acer and laptop makers in general are getting regarding supporting Photoshop, and even point them at this thread if you feel it would help.

Is there any way for now that you can set the GPU acceleration setting to "off" and get at least some acceptable operation out of it?  You'll be doing without specifically GPU-accelerated features, but it should be possible to get some editing operations done on your Aspire.

Most of the editing tools work fine with the new 8GB of memory, the biggest annoyance is the crash that comes (without fail) when closing the programme. Is that definitely the driver that is causing that and not a bug of some kind? It seems strange that the programme should crash when it's under no pressure. Incidentally, it only crashes if a photo has been opened and even if has not been edited at all. It doesn't crash if I open the programme and close it again without ever opening up a photo

From what I've observed, over a long period of time, the display driver seems to cause that "crash on exit" behavior.  Near as I can tell it corrupts memory, and that breaks something at the end, when resources are being freed.  I've had versions of ATI drivers that did that almost all the time, and other versions that did it not at all, and have seen the problem come and go with a different version of ATI drivers being the only change.

Hi,

It depends on the build version you have, at a minimum. Starting with the 13.1 (Ps CS6) subscription, enabling the 3D features requires a 512 VRAM minimum. Even with the perpetual 13.0 (Ps CS6 Extended) version, there is a 512MB minimum requirement, but it was not enforced.

The current subscription version 14.0 (Ps CC) cotinues the required 512 MB VRAM requirement.

Other factors such as the video card driver support and class of integrated GPU chipset, will alos lead to disabled 3D features.
