Question

Photoshop CS6 has stopped opening many of my older photoshop files.

I keep getting two errors when trying to open older files that I created with the same version I'm currently using which is CS6.

I've tried all the normal or work around fixes and nothing works. Tried to open in paint, and that didn't work. Tried to open in illustrator with same results.  Tried to change the file extension with numerous different ones, all of which didn't work. Tried to delete the file extension and do an open with Photoshop and that didn't work either. Adobe told me it was a microsoft issue and to contact them, so I did. Microsoft accessed my machine and recreated the error in several different ways and they tell me it is in fact a phototop issue related to the version of photoshop or an update that happened.

Either way I have a lot of files now that I can't open or access in photoshop when in fact 90 percent of them were all created and edited with photoshop.

Customer support basically told me unless I want to update to the paid monthly photoshop they can't help me.   This is the typical [cursing removed] customer service available now days.  They sell  you product, take your money then say, Figure it out yourself we don't have customer support now unless you pay for the monthly PS subcription.    Please tell me there is something I can do besides the paid monthly option as that isn't acceptable when I paid good money for the hard copy of the CS6 suite.

By the way I'm running windows 10 currently in case that matters.

Are you sure the files haven't been corrupted somehow?

What file format are the files?

If possible posting one of the offending files here to the forum will let other users try

with newer photoshop versions or maybe determine what's wrong with the files.

I can't load it on here, this is the error message I get.

Uploading DAB Graphics LOGO Sticker 12-1-20.jpg resulted in the following error: Error Code: Invalid File Type

Hi @DB CS6 issues that is actually telling. Most likely the file extension was changed manually and those are not really .jpg files. Try changing one of the files extensions to .psd or .tif to see if they open.

Maximize compatibility is in Preferences.

What it does is insert a flattened composite in the file, so even if layers can't be read, you can always open the composite. Lightroom also uses this composite.

If these PSDs were created in later Photoshop versions - that's anything post 2013! - and max compatibility is off, then you may not be able to open them in CS6.

I also have another machine with CS2 and it was opening them before but lately it won't open them either.

Where are the files stored? Like @Jeff Arola mentioned this now sounds like file storage corruption.

You can't open a Photoshop file in Illustrator. Did you try File > Place? I don't remember if that works in CS6. The fact that you cannot open the images in Microsoft Paint either makes me wonder about the images themselves and if they are corrupt. What is the file size? Are they stored on your hard drive or on a removable device?

Have you done a Malware check? You can get a 14-day free trial of Malwarebytes, for instance.

Place won't allow the file to be placed, it says its in a format which cannot be placed.

I run malware often so that shouldn't be an issue.

@DB CS6 issues

Can you answer the other two questions I asked as well? Here they are again:

  • What is the file size?
  • Are they stored on your hard drive or on a removable device?

I'm still thinking the files themselves are corrupt.

Hi @DB CS6 issues when you saved did you have "Maximize Photoshop Compatibility" active?
