Question

Photoshop CS6—many problems. Slow.

I'm hoping someone at Adobe can address the numberous bugs and general slowness in Photoshop CS6.

Before installing (MacBok Pro 2010 Intel i7, 8GB Ram) I whiped my drive and installed OS Lion. So CS6 went on clean.

What I'm finding:

1. General slugishness all around.

Layered PSD files I was using just fine in CS5 are now extremely slow. An examle is a small (20mb) web design file. So it has many layers (maybe 200, not 2,000) mostly comprised of typographic elements—not many layered effects to speak of. Not many image layers, either. Layer folders are slow to move, folders can't be moved using the shift + arrow key consecutive times, making it difficult to move a range of folders xxx pixels to the left, for example.

Things that were pretty snappy before, are now slow. This is very similar to the problems I and many others saw with the initial relase of CS5—in the next version (12.0.1 I think?) Adobe fixed the issue.

2. Problems with type, example keybaord arrow keys stop working many times when toye is selected. Frustrating.

More of a general rant here, but insted of (at least in addition to) a lot of other 'features' like video in PS extended (why not use Premiere?), 3d, etc., it would be really smart for Adobe to make core elements work better: A big complaint among interactive desigers is that type renders so poorly compared to CSS html. Maybe this could be addressed, as photoshop is used for the design of most all websites.

Oh-kay. I almost feel bad for jumping on the wagon here, but the opportunity to have this possibly addressed by Senior Engineers from Adobe was too good to pass

I'm looking to move to Photoshop CC, and had been wanting to check out Cs6 for starters. Currently, we do all our web design in Photoshop Cs5 Extended. To give Cs6 a fair shot, I swapped out the 7.2k Sata HDD for a brand new 120gb Sandisk Extreme SSD. I have a fresh Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) install, with pretty much nothing but Photoshop and Illustrator Cs6 trials installed. While I absolutely love the new features, the dark UI (finally!) and other updates, it's near impossible for me to work on my PSDs anymore because of the lag in moving layers/nudging with the keyboard. The lag is an almost two second delay in the object actually moving to where the mouse pointer is. The lag is equally obvious while panning the document up and down, and zooming in and out. Editting text/adding new text is laggy. Editting shapes is a minor lag deal though. There is no lag interacting with the Photoshop UI/panels, however. And many times the Cs6 will simply crash on load. Or upon opening any document. Both the 32/64bit versions.

I have been reading through the forums on here and blogs out there about the things people have been doing to try and fix it. Here's what I've tried out so far (without luck):

- Layer panel previews are off.

- Switched GPU Processing On/Off. Toggled between Basic, Normal and Advanced modes. Turned Vertical Sync off.

- History States down to 10.

- Disabled Autosaving of documents.

- Image Previews set to 'Never Save'

- Swapped scratch disk to non-booting partition. Assigned both partitions to Scratch disks. Reversed orders.

- Switched to lower allowance of Ram usage for photoshop (40%). Tried moving up to 70%

- Downloaded the FontScript jsx listed in one of the threads on here and ran it. It went through all 900 fonts I had installed back then and said it was all Okay.

- Deleted all installed fonts (as many as Win7 would let me, barring the system fonts) and overwrote the folder with Win7 default fonts I found on this helpful gentlemen's blog http://www.withsteps.com/404/how-i-restored-my-windows-7-default-fonts.html

- Ctrl-shift-alt while loading Photoshop CS6 to reset preferences. Multiple times.

- Updated Cs6. It got the update that a lot of people on these forums said fixed it for them. No luck.

- Checked to ensure Adobe Service Manager (?) was being run at Windows startup

- Disabled my antivirus.

- Been trying with no other applications running alongside, all this while. Except an Adobe AIR based twitter app.

- Updated my nVidia drivers to the absolute latest from their website. I have an NVidia 1.5GB GTX 460M.

- Downloaded and ran benchmark tools on my new SSD. Results are at par with a SATA3 SSD running on SATA2 mode. (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BJn0TmfCQAA1FH7.png:large)

- Turned down tile size to 128k.

- Got a large Dell Diagnostics util (Alien Autopsy, as they like to call it) to run extensive diagnostics on physical memory, hard drive stress among other things.

- Got Win7/Performance Monitor running to monitor peaks in Memory/CPU Usage. Nothing out of the ordinary. Physical Memory usage as per task manager: 4.3GB to 4.7GB

I'm on an Alienware M15x. 1.7Ghz i7 processor on an Intel P55 chipset.

1.5GB Nvidia GeForce GTX460m

8GB Ram.

120GB SSD

Desktop is at 1600x900

Windows7 WEI scores for my system right now:

Processor - 7.1/7.9

RAM - 7.4/7/9

Graphics - 6.9/7.9

Primary Hard Disk - 7.7/7.9

My last PSD was 1600x8400px sRGB. FileSize: 45mb. 72DPI. Around 200 layers, if all Layer groups were expanded. The same PSD worked just fine with Cs5 on the same laptop, even with a lower thorough-put Sata 7.2k rpm drive.

So, what else can I do to fix this?

Here's a quick System Info grab from Cs6:

Turn off "snap to layer", set the layer thumbnails to "document bounds" instead of layer bounds, and delete unnecessary layer comps (too many comps causes slowdowns, and I haven't had time to fix that one yet).

Yea, I turned those off too. No luck. Does this sound like a Video Card/driver issue, or a Hard Drive throughput issue?

Slow here too.  Just put CS6 on two machines.  Both are substantially choppy.  Will try some tweaks as suggested but disappointed.

First, go download and install the updates.

Then check for external causes.

I have been reading through a lot of these posts and can say the current Photoshop CS6 is running fairly smooth on a hi-end system. However, there are still some features like the Smudge Tool experiencing poor performance issues, especially when working with large scale images. Also, when activated, Extensis Font Manager plugin slows the menus system in Photoshop down so much that I’m not going to use it until this is resolved. Keep in mind, I haven’t fully tested all of Photoshop’s features on this build yet but I will update here if I find any other mentionable anomalies.

System Build:

- Win7 Ultimate 64bit

- Dual Xeon 3.8 GHz 12 Core

- 128Gig DDR3 SDRAM Quad Channel Server

- SSD / 2 x OCZ RevoDrive (3 X2 series 960GB)

- NVIDIA Quadro K5000

I actually tested it out on a 72 dpi website design with over 200 layers and then I also tested it out on a brand new file.  In both cases flickering and lag occured though it was less pronounced with the simple psd vs the one with many layers.

I'm also having problems with PhotoShop CS6 Extended 64bit (13.0.1) being very slow in opening, saving, drop downs and buttons taking seconds to actually react.

Example: From "Save for Web" window clicking on "JPEG" drop down to select "PNG" takes several seconds before actually initiating.

I primarily work with web development files.

I.E. Relatively small files with lots of layers typically under 100MB.

I've tried the suggestions in the forum.

  1. Disabling Graphics Acceleration.
  2. Turning off Layer Thumbnails.
  3. I don't use any thirs party plug-ins.
  4. Even went so far as to boot in safe mode to eleminate any background services as the cause.
  5. Ran the FontTest.jsx per the troubleshooting guide and all fonts check as clean.
  6. Created a full admin account and the problem persists running as admin.

At this point I'm out of ideas as to what is causing PhotoShop CS6 64bit to be so slow as it is the only application having this issue.

Below is my systems info:

OS: Windows 8 Pro 64 (all current updates and driver versions per DriverAgent.com)

Motherboard: ASRock X79 Extreme6 LGA 2011 Intel X79

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3820 CPU @ 3.60GHz

I just downloaded CS6 trial on my work iMac 2012 and MacBookPro 2011 model both have 12 gig ram, powerful graphics cards and are updated video drivers.

Laptop has Snow and iMac is Lion. Both cant load our huge 150 mb psd design files. CS4 and CS5 loads just fine.

NO settings changed. Fresh out of the box iMac and brand new install of CS6.

Sorry but CS6 is slow. There needs to be an update for sure.

You may feel your conclusion is founded based on seeing a similar issue on two systems, but rest assured it's not "slow" in the general sense.  In fact, I found it faster (by a small margin in general) than Photoshop CS5 on my PC.  I did objective tests.  Clearly you're not alone in finding Photoshop unacceptably sluggish on a Mac system, but you should try to imagine that it's not an issue for everyone even there.

Chris is not just toeing the company line; you really should work to try to find what it is on your systems that's getting in the way of Photoshop performance.  Install the latest update, for one.  For another, try the various GPU configuration settings (making sure to restart Photoshop after making changes).

Perhaps it would be helpful if you'd describe the performance you're experiencing in objective terms.  As in, "it takes sssss seconds to do dddddddd with an image that's xxx by yyy pixels in bbb bits/channel, with a brush size of zzzz", etc.

But as I asked before:  Did update your CS6 to the current patch level? There have been a number of bugs fixed, including some of those described in this thread, which goes way back.

I'm making the assumption you'd like Photoshop CS6 to work as well as CS5, as it does for most.

I responded in my previous 2 posts that yes everything is updated

Noel has pointed out this thread to me. I'll add my 2 cents. I am using PSCS 5 (version 12.1) and I just started seeing this slowdown. This is after many months of exemplary performance. I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 cores running at 2.8 GHz, 10 GB RAM, and a 100 GB blank scratch disk, which has always been plenty of power for the kind of stuff I do. Suddenly, I am getting spinning wait cursors and lazy progress bars on opening & saving small files. Operations in Photoshop lag and are slow to respond. I have already done basic troubleshooting such as repair permissions, run Disk Warrior, restart, reset power management, empty font caches, etc. I even disabled my entire FontAgent Pro fonts folder to see if it would make any difference. It did not.

you all seem quite knowledgeable so i will pose my question. i am running CS6 on a 2012 macbook pro, OS Lion 10.7.4, 2.3 GHz intel core i&, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3. what i want to do is so simple in the grand scheme of photoshop.  i create an action, save the action, and want to run that action on a batch of files.  for some reason despite photoshop recognizing all the actions i have taken, this saved action will not work properly, and to be honest the issues are different every time.  sometimes it prompts me if i want to save even though i already authorized it to select dont save for that stated item, other times it prompts me to make choices on the resolution of the image i'm saving even though i authorized it to make those choices.  i can see all these commands in the action list, so it makes no sense why the program just wont execute them. other times i paste something onto the image and during the automation process it paste it in another location on the image. WTF!?
all these issues stem from a single set of recorded actions.  when i created these recorded actions ins CS4 and CS5 I had no issues.  i would still be using CS4, but my new laptop w/ Lion will not allow me to run CS4.  seriously for the money i spent on this program i expect it to be able to do something this simple. i have wasted an entire day trying to figure this out and after stumbling on this thread am coming to the conclusion that CS6 is just one glitchy b*tch!

Without you posting your actions it is inposible to know what you action actually do and the description of the problems your having are not very clear. So its hard to know if the problems your having are Photoshop problems or problems caused by the way you recorded the actions. I assure you I'll be the first to state that CS6 has more then its fair share of bugs.  Still not all bugs are in Photoshop.  CS6 is the buggest version of Photishop ever released by far.

I'm heading back to CS5 because it's too difficult to get things done in CS6. I have the same slow problems that everyone seems to be having but in addition I have weird things happening with my Wacom pen. Most of the time I select the brush and paint, nothing happens, I checked all the brush settings and there is no problem there. Other times the brush works. It also seems to freeze the program as well until I switch to the mouse and select another tool. Same thing happens with the lasso tool, the pen works sometimes and not others. I like to use the brush to paint on layer masks for soft effects, this pretty much never works in CS6. I spend half my time trying work-arounds.

The 14th ammendement to the US constitution does in fact state: don't buy an Adobe product until about 3 months after it's released so they can fix it all :-P Same for Microsoft, FYI.  Initial buyers are inexpensive beta testers.

It's been 5 months since the first bugs were reported against the public beta.

Not everyone finds Photoshop CS6 so buggy and slow that they want to revert.  I find it better in many ways than Photoshop CS5 myself, and would never consider switching back.  But that has to do with what you use it for and what your system is like.  If I were having the problems described here I'd certainly be singing a different tune.

UPD

So, this time I've removed all PS settings that I had, set cache tile size to 128K, turned off layer previews, turned off snapping, set 50% of ram available for the app. 4 hours, so far -- works better, not perfectly fine, but much better. Wondering what else could that be. Anyways, I can just confirm the problem with layer thumbnails. Also, app slows down when I use new feature - text styles. Takes it a while to process any change.

So about "slow photoshop CS6 " , and freezing up some times..

So i updated my workhorse machine to Mountain Lion, so that i had the most modern drivers for my graphics card..

I also added more RAM memory..

That worked fine, a few hours, and i thought that i 've solved the problem, ( as adobe people told us that it's probably the graphics card driver ).

But today, i remarked the same things happening again, freezing while using cloning or healing bursh, slow respons..
I thought this is strange.

So what i discoverd, is that also yesterday, suddenly my HD was running low on space, strange as i store nothing on it except the apps, so i dit a litle search of the biggest folders on my HD in the terminal,

And found it was the /private/var/log, folder...  so went to take a look and emptied it..

PS CS6 worked fine again; Today again same problem it started to freeze up again ...
So went to the /private/var/log/asl folder again, an sure it was filling up with log files again ( heavy ones 15mb 20 mb's a piece even 2bm's and so on) ...  So deleted them, and now it works fine again

I made a litle automator action to empty the ASL folder or /privat/var/log/asl folder every time PSCS6 start to freez,

I'll keep you guys updated if this works out..

Well I want to add my couple of dimes into this discussion.

MacBookPro 2011: MacOSX 10.7.4, 2GHz Intel i7, 8Gb DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256 MB

Yes, Photoshop CS6 seemed to work much slower than CS5.

Even in the beginning of work with a particular document - dragging multiple layers was a pain. What we call here a "TBS" mod. Dragging layers from one document into another seemed to be a nearly impossible operation. Thus, in a short time it starts to affect other operations. In 10-15 minutes Photoshop consumes all available memory, freezes, and sometimes - crashes.

I don't have any antiviruses or any special software running in the background.

Purging history and cache didn't help. I have similar performance settings for my CS5.1 and CS6 applications. (~70% of ram available, thin&tall cache level options, disabled GP).

However, after turning off thumbnail preview in layers palette things seem to become normal.

Maybe these details will help somehow to understand the problem. As a UX VD I just love new features of CS6, (especially video driver bug workarounds for macs ), but I had to postpone the upgrade purchase to make sure I won't run into those types of problems.

August 10, 2012

Update, guys.

Turning off layer thumbnails did not actually help.

Well, I mean, it did, but so insignificantly, that isn't worth mentioning.

I keep updating. Lots of bugs since I've started running CS6 yet one of my coworkers "seems to be fine".

CS6 is BUG CITY!!!!  Ran into many problems with illustrator, dreamweaver, and photoshop is the biggest headache. Small things, but the small bugs are what get annoying since it's every 10 minutes or so.

Very, VERY, frustrating.

Kind of an interesting statement, Eric...

Your setup is buggy while a co-worker's seems to be fine.

Doesn't that kind of imply that the problems are with the integration of Photoshop CS6 into your system, not in Photoshop CS6 itself?

Rather than just gripe, please write up a new post for the bugs you're seeing, and I'm sure there are those of us on here who can help you overcome at least some of them.

Same exact copy, same machines, same everything. Every time I've updated, it's actually solved a problem, but another one arises out of nowhere. Two other coworkers are experiencing trouble as well, only one isn't.

Anyhow, keyboard was locking up, then the mouse was, then the scroll wheel, and then it just became unresponsive to any keyboard commands. Quit, then restart. Works. Having to do it every hour or two really bites, but it's just sort of random.

This is all just photoshop. I do use a Wacom tablet, reinstalled drivers, using a standard apple keyboard, apple monitor, 13" macbook 2.7ghz i7 16gb ram and 160gb ssd with a secondary 500gb drive.

Dreamweaver is another story. CS5 ran perfectly. The one employee without cs6 problems, had many errors/bugs on CS5.
