Hey guys I've been trying to figure something out for awhile now and I feel like it definetely shouldn't be this hard. Any help is appreciated thanks!

So what I'm trying to do is make the football's laces transparent. IMG_2493.jpg

I planned to do this by making a custom brush in the shape of the laces and then erasing the black football layer with the custom brush to make it transparent.

Here is the selection I made of the laces by using marquee tool ctrl click on laces layer thumbnail:

Then when I try to use the custom brush as an eraser it does this:

It works but for some reasons only the outline of the laces is erased. I don't understand why because the selection I used to make the custom brush has the entire laces layer selected. What am I doing wrong here? Is there a better way to go about this? Thanks in advance.

That's odd... can we please see the brush panel with this brush, and maybe your layers???

It's difficult to know what is going on from your description, but I am wondering if you are going about this in the right way?  There are several things you can do to track down your issue though.

Is the ball on its own layer, or is it the background layer?  Things will work better if it is NOT a background layer. Just click the little lock icon on the Background layer to make it an ordinary layer.

With the selection in place, tap the Q key to turn on Quick Mask.  This will reveal exactly what is selected.

I suggest hitting the Delete key to remove the lace rather than use the eraser.  Note: this will not work if it is a Background layer.

NOTE:  I have Quick Mask set to indicate the Selected area.  It's thew other way round by default.  Double click the Quick Mask icon at the bottom of the toolbar to change it.
