Question

Photoshop defaults to saving jpeg files as PDF

Hello,

Every time I open a jpeg file and attempt to save, it defaults the file to PDF. This just started a few weeks ago. I need it to default to jpeg, as I am handing large amount of image files everyday and it is quite tedious to manually select "jpeg" from the dropdown menu every single time. I have seen similar posts related to this, but the answers provided in those do not resolve this issue. I'm using Photoshop CC on a Mac running High Sierra. Thanks in advance.

Hi 🙂 Did you ever fix this - I have the same problem 😞 Thanks!

OK: I googled and discovered that this is in fact a Mac thing. On Windows the background layer is Background, not Background.

Anyway. As a test, open a jpeg and do something that is allowed in jpeg. Make a simple direct pixel adjustment with Image > Adjust (not an adjustment layer), and try again. If this won't work, then something really is wrong. A preferences reset should have fixed that, unless you have a corrupt install.

You'll have to excuse us, but several times a week people come here because they can't save directly to jpeg. The reason is always that there is something in the file not supported in the jpeg spec.

Regardless of whether or not I've made adjustments to the file, it automatically defaults to save as PSD. With no adjustments (simply opening the file and attempting to "save", or "save as", it attempts to save to PSD. I'm not working in or manipulating layers. As I've mentioned, the problem is not that I cannot save to jpeg -- I absolutely can -- but that it defaults to saving as a PSD. I can absolutely manually use the dropdown menu to click "jpeg" every time, but this is very prohibitive to workflow.

Aha > it is because you are using a 16bit file.

If you change it to 8 bit, then you can save a JPG (which does not support 16bit)

Hi

Have you tried resetting Photoshop preferences

Thank you, but yes, I have already tried resetting Photoshop preferences. This does not help the problem.

Hi Jessica

Can you show a full screen screenshot (including the layers panel, and the document header) just before you use File Save. Then show a screenshot of the File>Save dialogue.

If opening a JPG file and it it's not a layered file and is only a singular background image.

Then CMD / CTRL + S works.

Unfortunately it does not, as this produces no action.

Also, to note, I have reset the master preferences in Photoshop. Unfortunately it just defaults to PSD. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you considered using File > Quick Export ?

You can set the Export Preference to JPG and then set Quality you desire.

You could also add a Keyboard shortcut to expedite the action.

Thanks for the option, but I don't want to export, as that will make a copy. I don't need a copy. I want to very quickly save the file after I have worked on it, using the original format (jpeg). How can that be accomplished?
