Question

Photoshop edit history

Hi all,

In Photoshop if I have done a number of edits, return to an earlier edit, add another edit, the recent steps are deleted and I cannot return to them. Is there a way of reverting to previous edit steps without using non - linear history? I find non-linear history confusing if I have done many edits.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Before you "return" to the earlier edit, click the camera button to take a snapshot, and take more along the way if you need to. You can click any snapshot to return to that state.

As with all History, Snapshots disappear when you close the file.

Thanks Jane.

Does snapshot retain layers and layer position?

Steve,

History is nice but it's all virtual!   If the power goes out, you're toast.

Better to save copies of your work at various intervals in the design process.  That way if you need to revert to a previous state, you have it saved on your HD.  With complex projects, it's not unusual to have 10-20 copies saved.

Thanks, but that does not really answer my question, although I agree totally.

If I hit ctl-Z, I thought it would take me back unlimited times, to the start of the edit. Is that not possible? It only seems to take me back one step unless I use non linear history, which would achieve what I want.

Which version of Photoshop do you have?

Up until very recently Undo (Ctrl+Z) only removed the last edit.

Reverting back 2 or more states could only be achieved from the History panel.

Hi Nancy,

Currently  running 22.4.2. How many states can you now revert and how do you do that?

Steve
