Photoshop forcing Save As instead of Save

Since the recent update or one before that I can't just "save" images I open to edit.

When I work in Indesign I need to work on the images I use. I always open them from ID to PS and then edit what I need (colours, shrapness,..). I then have actions saved for "convert to CMYK" ,... and at the end "Save and exit" to preserve the link in ID. But now I can't just "save" images as I get an error saying that the infomration can't be preserved and forces me to "save as"

This brakes the whole workflow with ID.

Any workaround?

OK, the workaround is to flatten the image and the "save" function then works.

Yeah, that change tripped me up too. Adobe recently adjusted how Save works with certain file types (especially when you’re working with things like linked images from InDesign). If the file has features that aren’t compatible with the original format, Photoshop now forces a “Save As.”

One workaround is to make sure you’re saving in the same format without introducing features that break compatibility (like layers in a JPEG, for example). Another option is to use “Save a Copy” or adjust your action steps so it targets a format that won’t trigger the “Save As” prompt. Not ideal, but it keeps the workflow moving until Adobe revisits it.

The best workflow for images in InDesign is to place a layered PSD, then edit it starting in InDesign as you have been. You can revert Photoshop's behavior to the previous Save options.

This change was forced by a change in Apple's API, btw.

As of 22.4.1, you can find png, jpg, pdf, etc., in Save a Copy.
As of 22.4.2 you can revert to the previous behavior in Preferences > File Handling > File Saving Options:
