Photoshop Gradient Tool Only Applying Gradient In One Direction

I've been using Photoshop for years and have never had problems with the gradient tool until today.  For whatever reason when I click and drag the gradient tool, set to linear, the gradient goes only from left to right regardless of which direction I drag.

The problem seems to have resolved itself.  Not sure what happened but things are back to normal at the moment.

    Hello, maybe did you press the shift key, it constrains the gradient to 45 degrees angles?
