Question

Photoshop is creating it's own layers

Hi

Do I have a fault here?

I have unlocked layers that I'm trying to move and Photoshop won't let me move them with Move tool. Instead it might automatically select another layer and start moving that layer, or, annoyingly it is creating it's own new layers. I can lock every other layer and it will attempt to move the layer I am working on but then selects transform tool and will only let me transform it, not move it. I've checked updates and it's fine. I almost go to throw the computer at the wall stage here - is this a common problem? Please help

Thanks in advance

Check that you do not have the Move Tools option bar checked to auto-select layers because . That can change  what layer is targeted.

Thank JJ Mack - yes I did have this checked actually, but when I unchecked it I am still getting the same problem - cannot alter the original layer's text, it's creating a new layer still

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

What are the Move Tool’s settings (Auto-Select, Show Transform Controls, …)?

thanks for response c_pfaffenbichler. Layer 4 is my text layer (I'm not sure what move tool settings are - I've just unchecked auto-select layers). I've closed the program down. Still when I use type tool on layer 4 it automatically creates layer 5 and will not work with 4 anymore.

»Layer 4« is no Type Layer, one can see that indicated by the Layer’s icon.

Maybe you rasterized it at some point.

Just to summarize the move tool is temperamental - it works when it wants to work

What have you done for trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

Thanks for this - I just realised they gave me Elements 8 - I hadn't known how old it was so updates not even available. I purchased Photoshop last year at the tech store, then somehow later on the trial version ended up downloaded and my purchased program erased, then the trial ended and the help centre gave me Elements 8 link to download. Would have been nice if they'd given me the original back like I paid for in the first place. The help link doesn't work however - the one time I got through they hung up on me. Online chat is a slow process!
