Photoshop issues working off of an AFP server on Apple M1 and OS Monterey

Question

Hello community, we've been working off of the server for decades and the past year or so, we've been running into a lot of issues working off of our server using AFP. We resisted upgrading from Mojave to the newer OS until it was impossible to stay on Mojave because of the inability to upgrade to the newer version of Adobe software so we took the plunge. we upgraded to Monterey but at first we were on Intel CPU and we did noticed some saving to the server issues but then we upgraded to the Mac Studio M1 running Mac OS Monterey. We downgraded from Ventura to Monterey. My guess is the issue might be worse in Ventura but we downgraded for other reasons.

Anyways the issue we've been running into and I see others have also is that when we go to save, we wouldn't be able to save and the disk error message pops up. If we save to the desktop and copy over to the server, then it's fine but just trying to see if there's any solution or workaround for this. Is changing to SMB instead of AFP a better option? Just pulling my hair out trying to figure out a way to avoid the error messages.

I don’t know the specific answer to this, and I am not a network server expert, but it reminds me of some background information that might help you. Feel free to ignore this if it’s just telling you something you already know, but my impression is that AFP is likely to be trouble because developers, led by Apple, have been pulling support away from AFP for many years. In the few major versions of macOS, SMB has become the current Mac standard for file sharing, but not always implemented well in macOS.

Apple’s original AFP was introduced in Classic Mac OS System 6, way back in 1988, and its use has been deprecated for the last eight years…Apple is now progressively removing support for AFP, and has already removed its server from Big Sur. It’s not known when Apple intends to remove its client from macOS, though…

…If you’re going to use SMB as recommended by Apple, the most robust way seems to be disable AFP on all NAS which support SMB.

…AFP is Apple’s own protocol which was originally developed for Classic macOS, and has been widely supported by networked devices including storage such as NAS. But its use has now been deprecated for six years, since OS X 10.9 Mavericks. The last release was of AFP 3.4 over seven years ago, and since the introduction of Apple’s new file system APFS, it hasn’t been supported for the sharing of APFS volumes, only for the older HFS+.
