Photoshop Lag and Menu Flicker

Photoshop 2023, 24.1 

Windows 11 Pro x64

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12 - Core 3.7Mhz

32GB of DDR4 RAM 2133 MHz

Samsung 970 Evo M.2 1TB install location

GPU: Invidia 1080ti latest driver: 527.56

 

Photoshop has updated and I've run into an issue when editing my .TIFF, .CR3, .PNG and .JPG. When my file loads in photoshop takes it's sweet time to load. I see the status circle on my screen but it's not moving. It can take up to 30 seconds at times. Once it is loaded all my menus flicker when I open them up. It's acting as if it's a graphics issue. This makes it hard adjusting levels, curves or anything precisely. I do astrophotography and have a program called PixInsight which is used to edit the RAW .FIT images and that program is running perfect after the latest GPU update. So I don't think it's a GPU problem but more a Photoshop. This is the first time I've edited on the new version of Photoshop and ran into this issue. 

 

I uninstalled/reinstalled photoshop, issue remains

Unchecked use GPU in preferences within PS, issue remains

Ran Windows memory test and memtest, both passed

Uninstalled Nvidia driver via DDU in safe mode w/out networking, reboot and reinstall new driver, issue remains

Verified that the same issue is happening within lightroom as well.

 

Has anyone else had performance issues and menu flickering since the December update? I tried installing other versions but they keep failing.

    Thank you for your suggestion. Deactivating Native Canvas and Enabling Native Canvas Rulers worked. I tested it a couple of times and it sure thing if native canvas is enabled and native canvas rulers are disabled the whole thing just lags and sometimes crashes. Following your suggestion photoshop is working as normal, responsive, and great again. Thank you so much.

    FIXED!!!!!!! I had the same problem. what endeed up working for me was going to Edit > Preferences > Technology Previews. Then check the box Older GPU mode (pre 2016). Click OK and restart photoshop. Then Say Im awsome.

    @Matthew27744556najt I'm glad to hear you were able to get the flickering to stop by using Deactivate Native Canvas. Thanks for letting us know! In your system info, it indicates what free space you have on your scratch volume. Maybe I am reading it wrong?

    Thank you for your comment. I'm not sure where you're getting the 247GB from. My P drive where PS is installed has 1.63TB free. It is working now though after trying what @TheDigitalDog suggested. However, Lightroom still flickers but Lightroom Classic works perfect.

      It's incredibly frustrating that this bizarre solution actually works. I mean, why should it? Photoshop was working fine until last week and now this is suddenly a problem. I probably spent 6 hours trying to find a solution, time I will never get back. Can't stand Adobe.

      Hi @Matthew27744556najt, thanks for the video and for sharing your system info. I notice you have Photoshop installed on a “P” drive instead of in a C:\Program Files directory, and your scratch volume startup shows only 247.9G free. This may have nothing to do with your problem. Since the lag and freeze issue started with version 24.1, I'm assuming you've been running other versions of Photoshop on this system without difficulties. Maybe a roll back to 24.0.1 is all I can suggest for now? Others may have more ideas for you, too.

       

      For the flickering, you probably checked your monitor driver and HDMI cable. Does your system tend to heat up when running Photoshop (fan surges)? You didn't say if you have the gaming or studio driver. Some users have reported problems with AMD Ryzen 9 and Windows 11 and you might check into that on their communities. Do you run other Adobe apps okay? No concerns with flickering when running Bridge or Lightroom Classic, for example? Anything more you can tell us will help narrow things down. Wish I could be more help!

      You can try this too: in Preferences>Technology Previews, check the box 'Deactivate Native Canvas' and uncheck 'Enable Native Canvas Rulers' options, then restart Photoshop. Does this work?


      Disable third-party graphics accelerators. Third-party GPU overclocking utilities and haxies aren't supported.
