Photoshop Layer Group Folder won't stay closed

I just switched to the photoshop 2017 and noticed a weird behavior with layer group folders.

Essentially, I would expect the group folder to stay closed unless I open it explicitly, but photoshop 2017 is opening them automatically.

If I have the layer group closed, it'll open if I click on it. This is especially frustrating if I just want to work with the group's mask. Because now if I add another adjustment layer, it'll be added inside the group. This behavior wasn't there in photoshop 2015.

In fact, if the top most group is closed, I do a selection, then add an adjustment layer, I would expect the new adjustment layer to go above (outside) the group, but it'll be added inside the group instead. This behavior wasn't there in photoshop 2015 either.

Is this happening to anyone else too?

I have a problem where if I click the > button it wouldn't close! I can't seem to close groups with multiple layers which is very frustrating because some photoshop projects I'm working on may have over 100 layers.

Anyone knows how to resolve this?

I know this is an old post, but I was having this issue in 2023, another fix is to make sure you have the Move Tool selected then at top new to the Auto-Select option use the drop down to choose Group instead of Layer.

I think that I am having the exact issue that you are after I updated Photoshop.

I am working on a file which has multiple layers that are contained in folders. Those folders have masks on them. If I click anywhere on the folder the folder auto expands. Even if I do not hit the ">" looking arrow. This is very frustrating as it opens each folder everytime. I have to go back and manually close each folder.

This also happens when using a short cut to navigate layers.

Benrodda, Yes, this is the exact scenario that I'm describing. You touched on another point that I forgot to mention: The folders auto-expand when you navigate the layers panel with shortcuts.

It's very frustrating as you said. Because if a "group" is at the very top of the layers stack and I use shortcut keys to navigate there, or if I clicked on that group's mask, it'll auto-expand, subsequent new adjustment panels will go into that folder (which is expected because the group has expanded, or twirled open). The correct behavior should be that the group does NOT auto expand, and new adjustment layers should go on top of the "group".

Benrodda, are you using windows or mac?

Are you talking about clicking on the group in the layers panel, or on the groups contents in the document window?  I am guessing the former, but I am not seeing the same behaviour here with CC 2017  and Windows 10.  However groups are twirled open if I have the Move tool selected, and Auto Select checked, which is what you would expect to happen.

If this is a bug, then it might be platform specific, so can you tell us exactly what operating system you are using?

Regards the placement of Adjustment layers, then for me they are placed above the group if it is twirled closed, and inside the group (at the top) if the group is twirled open.  ISTR that the top of the group's layers placement is a recent change.

Mac OS 10.11.3 (El Capitan) Photoshop CC 2017

    >Are you talking about clicking on the group in the layers panel

Yes, that's the one. Layers panel, folder looking icon

Picture a setup like this: "Group 1" contains a levels adjustment layer. "Group 1" also has a Layers Mask

    - "Group 1" contains a levels adjustment layer. "Group 1" also has a Layers Mask

    - I collapse Group 1

    - if I click on the mask for "Group 1", it twirls open <- This shouldn't happen, at least it didn't on PS2015

The group should only twirl open when I click on the ">" symbol. It should remain closed until I explicitly open it, right?
