Photoshop opens a file with a smaller version of the image atop the normal sized image

When I open files with dimensions larger than 1000 pixels wide, or so, it displays the image but with a smaller version of the image atop. When I decrease the viewer window to 50% the smaller image goes away. How can I stop this from happening because I can't do any editing at larger view sizes. Screen grab attached.

Environment:

  • I'm using Photoshop 24 (release 25.0.0) within Creative Cloud (though this issue was happening with Photoshop 23).
  • I'm running Ventura (13.5.2) (though this issue was happening with the previous iOS) on a Macbook Pro
  • 13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • Processor: 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
  • Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 MB
  • Memory: 32 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4X
  • Hard Drive: 414 GB available out of 2 TB

Thanks!

Does it happen with all images? Does it happen when you make a new document as well?

Yes, it happens if I open a new document and oddly retains the image from a previous document, even if I have something awaiting in the clipboard.

Hi @Larryman61 Go to Photoshop Preferences/Technology Preview and check “Disable Native Canvas”. Quit and relaunch PS. Does the error persist?

@Larryman61 next, go to Preferences(Settings) Performance, and turn of "Multithread Compositing". Restart.

I've seen this before and we ended up removing previous PS install resources in Library/Application Support and Caches.

I went in and turned off Multithread Compositing and restarted Photoshop and now there's a little version of it on the right side instead of the left side. See below.

@Larryman61 well here is what I would do next. In each instance you'll be removing old version Photoshop files, but leaving the current.

Quit Photoshop then:

1. Go to Mac HD/Users/(your user name)/Library/Caches and toss the com.adobe.Photoshop cache and any older versions that may be in there.

2. Go to Mac HD/Users/(your user name)/Library/Application Support and toss any previous Adobe Photoshop builds.

3. Go to Mac HD//Users/(your user name)/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Photoshop and remove all older version preferences.

4. Download Onyx. It is free, safe and a reliable means to remove Mac Cache files.

Launch Onyx and run Maintenance set to these settings:

This will restart your Mac after completion.

After all this launch PS and see if the issue persists.

If it does persist through all this - the next step would be to uninstall everything and run the CC Cleaner tool and try a fresh install of Photoshop from scratch. Hopefully this repairs before drastic steps need to happen.

Thanks. I'm going to pour a good stiff drink, look out at the setting sun, think about this, get a good night's sleep, and try this tomorrow. Appreciate the support.
