Question

Photoshop opens PSDs with default preferences

I'm using Photoshop CC 2017 (latest version) on Windows 10

When I click on a PSD, Photoshop insists on opening a version that has none of my preferences set (i.e. zoom with scroll. workspace colour set to xxxx).

When I open Photoshop and then load a PSD, Photoshop opens a version that remembers my correct preferences - although to get this to work I have to run it as an administrator... and make sure any links open the same version.

Why does opening a PSD ignore my preferences?

Thanks

I agree with JJMack. In the Explorer view quoted above in his post, it would be very useful to click the address bar to see the full path (since the truncated view starts with the Zig folder).

Hi - Happy New Year... thanks for the help so far.

I took another look at the user directory in the address bar... and yes, something odd is happening

When I cut and paste this into File Explorer:

C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 Settings

Where User is the name of the directory on the C:drive file explorer finds the correct sub-directory and changes User to Zig

However if I enter this path

C:\Users\Zig\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 Settings

File explorer tells me that it the location does not exist.

I'm really confused... but agree that Windows 10 is not happy.

That should not happen and it it were renames to Zig and when does it get renamed back  to User?

Are you sure your Windows 10 View options are set to show hidden  folders and files  that you chose Show and un-checked Hide?

How come, in the very last image, your user name is "User," but in the first image, your user folder is "Zig?"

It's almost like we're looking at two different systems.

That is odd... but as far as I can tell there is only one account on the machine -  I certainly don't remember setting it up any other way and there's nothing on the C: drive to indicate that there's more than one account - or preference files for additional users.  I'll dig a bit more.

Do you dual boot that machine or use virtual machines.  It look like two OS are in use.  One has a single user named user in the users folder.  On the other OS we see user id Zig appdata Photoshop cc 2017 preferences.

Are both of the pictures photograph taken of the same windows 10 machine using with the same user ID. For is looks like two different sets of Photoshop preferences are being used and the one with the dark Photoshop UI may be Adobe default set of preferences like a new Window 10 user ID would get. If a user ID has not Phptoshop Preferences and defailt set of Preferebces will be created fot that user id when that user starts Photoshop the first time.    Photoshop default is to edit images in tabs and have Dark Photoshop UI Colors.  These captures show different Photoshop UI color preferences used and the image in capture with the light Photoshop UI colors is in a floating windows.  The one opened from windows file explorer opening a PSD shows the user ID set their Photoshop UI to a lighter set of colors and to not open image in tabs to edit images in floating windows.  It looks like different Windows 10 users id are being used.

Try editing the Photoshop Presences in both of your cases you should see different sets.  Preferences are saved in the user ID appdata space for each version od Photoshop.  Even if you have both the 32bit and the 64bit version of Photoshop CC 2017 installed they would share the same set of preferences there are setting for the Plug-in paths for 32bit and 64 bit plugin folders.

There is only one location for each user id where CC 2017 preferences to be stored. Even if you have installed CC2017 X64 is several location.   Preferences for CC 2017 for each user id  will  be in a single location.

    "C:\Users\User ID\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 Settings\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 Prefs.psp"

Hi JJMack - thanks for the info. After a little more digging here is some extra information.

"Dark" PS - this is the version I use. It lets me make changes to the preferences and stores those changes in the .psp file at the location you specified.

"Light" PS - this one does not store preference changes and does not update the .psp at the file location mentioned.  (But there must be a config file for it somewhere I guess)

As far as I can tell I'm the only user on my system.

Is there anywhere else I can look?

If you have more than one version of Photoshop installed. What OS are you using and what version of Photoshop is launched by default.  On windows only one version of Photoshop can run at any given time, If a Photoshop is open the version will be used, If a version is not running the Photoshop version registered in Windows registry key Photoshop will be started.  I have CC 2014 set in there,  So CC2014 will start if I do not have a version running.   I have CS2, CS6, CC, CC 2014, CC 2015, CC 2015.5 and CC 2017.   I have the least problems with CC 2014 so I set that version as my default version.

I do not know how Mac work for more than on version of Photoshop I believe can run at a time.

As far as I know, I've only got one version loaded on a relatively new Windows 10 machine.

Here's what it looks like when I open PS and load a PSD

And here's what it looks like when I click on a PSD and it opens PS

Wow, that's a strange one. I can honestly say I've never seen that happen!

I'll do some digging, but as far as I know that shouldn't happen. Have you tried resetting Photoshop's preferences to the default? Just for the record, the dark interface is now the default, so there doesn't seem to be a good reason for the lighter interface to show up as in your second example.
