I have saved the file in PSD in Photoshop, but all the layers are merged without asking and there is a only background. I want to keep the layers separately. I have renamed and saved the file many times and it remains the same. Please help

The PSD format will allow you to save a layered file, but the layers must exist. If they have already been flattened, then you might see if you have an earlier version of the file.

If you've saved your document previously as a cloud document, you may be able to revert to a earlier version:

If you didn't flattent your document, you could see if your single layer is actually a Smart Object that has preserved the layers:

Thank you for your answer.
Fortunately, I haven't closed Photoshop yet so I have the layered file. A
lot of the layers in this file are Smart objects, but when I save as and
open it, it merges them into one background. With so many layers it is hard
to convert 100% of them all to Smart objects. Other files save fine with
layers separate. Is there any other solution?

Maybe try saving a copy as PSD (File > Save a Copy) to your local hard drive. Then open that copy. If you're seeing the layers in this copy flattened, would you be able to post a screenshot of your Layers panel?

I think you misunderstood the answer. Photoshop should be able to save a layered file as PSD without the need to change the layers to smart object. If you have the Save as dialog on screen, then look at the part below where you pick the destination. There is a Layers checkbox. Did that get unchecked by mistake perhaps?

Another possibility: did you choose pdf by mistake rather than psd?

Definitely saving as PSD, not PDF. When saving I can't find "a Layers checkbox"?? (Please see the image)  I copied and pasted all the same layers into a new document and was able to save the layered file! Maybe it was a bug?? since the saving process and layers have not changed...Thanks so much for your help. Screen Shot 0004-08-08 at 14.54.18.pngexpand image

Maybe use check under layer history and see when you flatten the file. Then choose that layer and your layers should return. Then save as a psd.

This appears to be Save As, which does not offer the ability to exclude layers from a PSD.

Save As a Copy does have a checkbox to exclude layers.

Yes, but for some reason, the layers are automatically excluded even though they were saved in PSD format:(

If you check the 'Legacy Save as' option in Preferences -  File handling, then you should get that layers checkbox in Save as. With a little luck it will also restore the correct behavior of Save as.
