Photoshop "File" and "Edit" Menu: Most Options Greyed Out

I have a new issue as of the past two days running Photoshop 23.4.1. Most of the options under the "File" menu stack are greyed out, including basic functions like opening a file. The "Edit" menu also has many options unavailable including "Preferences." The attached screenshot shows which options are greyed out under File and Edit. The only way I am able to open a file is to select it in Bridge then have it open in Camera Raw. Following that, I can open the file from Camera Raw into Photoshop (see the first screenshot as an example). Once I open the file I have been able to run my regular plug-ins on the file including Alienskin Exposure X7, the Nik Collection, and Topaz Labs AI plug-ins.

I am running the latest version of Windows 10 and the latest Studio Driver for my Nvidia RTX 3070 (v. 516.59, dated 6/29/22)

Hi

You can manually reset your preferences by either renaming or deleting the Adobe Photoshop 2022 Prefs file found in this location C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2022\Adobe Photoshop 2022 Settings

Hi Barbara, that's the tricky part. As you can see in the second screenshot, the "Preferences" option is greyed out as with so many other menu items.

Thanks for the clarification. Of course, that behavior is not normal. You could try resetting Preferences > General > Reset Preferences on Quit.

Thanks Barbara. To clarify, what I am saying is that I cannot open any file directly from Photoshop as the menu option to open any file is greyed out. However, if I open the same file first using Bridge, I can get it to load in Photoshop. I don't want to have to open a file through Bridge every time, of course.

If the file is in raw format it will automatically open in Camera Raw befoe you can bring it into Photoshop.
