Question

Photoshop reverting to last function, not saving history

I placed a photo in a Photoshop CC 2019 file and scaled it. I leave that file to copy another photo and when I return to the file the last photo I placed is no longer scaled. It's as if it is reverting back on its own and it is not listed in the history. It's a little annoying to have to save my document over and over as a remedy. Running on iMac late 2015, High Sierra. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

What do you mean there?  Photoshop is not a file editor and what do you mean by leave.  did you use any  Photoshop script after you scaled the placed smart object layer?  There is a bug in Photoshop scripting that can back up steps in Photoshop history which would undo your scaling step. If the scaling step was a step after place not done using Place transform dialog. If done with the Place transform.  The place step could be undone by the scripting bug..  Photoshop: Script bug resize layer back document up one history state | Photoshop Family Customer Community

I saw one script posted here that was bitten three times by the bug three steps were backed out.  Adobe chooses not to fix some bugs.

I reset my preferences in Photoshop and restarted the applications... that seems to have remedied the issue for now. Thanks for the link to the scripting bug, I will check it out as well.
