Photoshop Selection and Copy to New Layer not working properly

I've done this a million times, and it's worked flawlessly the last 999,999 times. I'm trying to get the subject of this photo on its own layer. I select it with any tool (I've tried quick select, lasso, pen), modify the edge with a 2px feather, and Ctrl+J to a new layer. 1st pic is what my selection looks like. 2nd pic is what I get after Ctrl+J. What is going on?? This is a big photo, 149.1M, 300px.

Hi there,

That shouldn't be happening, please try disabling "Legacy Compositing" located in Photoshop's Preferences > Performance menu and let us know if it helps.
