Photoshop showing invisible layers

First time posting here.

For a few weeks Photoshop has been showing layers that are turned "off" in the layers panel.

When I move items on a layer, the "original" item stays in place as if I duplicated the item; I can usually get the "original" to disappear by turning off all layers.

When masking an item, the "original" is often visible behind the masked item, making it impossible to see what I've done without moving the whole layer.

Screenshot attached.

Yes I've shut down, restarted, updated, all that.

Thank you for any suggestions.

So I noticed on another thread the suggestion to uncheck Legacy Compositing in the Performance section of Photoshop preferences. Doing that fixed the redraw problem. It also fixed the curves problem I was having.

I was having problems editing text on a graphic I made on the last version of photoshop. The old text wouldn't go away and the new text would show up over the old text. This was pretty frustrating. Unchecking "Legacy Compositing" fixed this, but now I wonder how many others freaked out about this like I did. I was about to look up how to revert to the last version of PS before trying this "one simple trick". (Sorry, I had to)

I just updated today and that was one of the first things I've noticed. Also, when manipulating a curve, the image will jump to an imagined point that does not reflect the change on the curve. Toggling the before/after icon updates the screen to what would be expected. Even tiny changes in the curve caused the jump in tones.
