Photoshop Sky Replacement is Slow

I am using Photoshop 25.0.0 and running Windows 11.  I'm using the Photoshop plugin from Lightroom Classic.  I'm having a problem selecting skies in the Sky Replacement feature.  I have my own collection of skies that I use.  There are around 500 of them to choose from.  What I am experiencing is scrolling through the pallet of skies is extremely slow.  When I scroll down it can take 5-10 seconds or more for the pallet to move.  It makes it very difficult to select the sky that I want to use.  The whole sky replacement feature is very slow compared to ON1 but selecting the skies is extremely slow.  Has anyone else experienced this and what can be done about it?

Can confirm that I'm having a problem with Sky Replacement in 25.1 as well. As soon as the dialogue appears, the entire app freezes.

That's a little different than what I am encountering.  I get the dialogue box and then, when I try to choose a sky, I have a problem.  It's extremely slow to navigate through the pallet and choose a sky.

@Jeff A. Goulden try updating your GPU driver - its only 5 mo. old but may make a difference. Also you have two GPUs installed an Intel 630 and your main one. Try disabling the Intel using this page:

Both GPU drivers were reported as up-to-date when I tried to update them.  I disabled the Intel driver and still have exceedingly slow performance in scrolling through the pallet of skies.

This problem is still continuing.  Nothing I have tried works.  I have several hundred skies in my library.  It takes forever to get to the one I want.

I've always thought that this was implemented in a way that didn't really encourage having too many sky images of your own. I have about 30-40 and don't have any problems -  but having to scroll down through them in a linear fashion isn't a practical way to pick the best one for the image. There should be a grid view that lets you see them all together.

Have you tried with fewer? Uploading new sky images happens quite quickly here, so you could try to delete half and see if it improves.

They are stored in your user account, in your settings folder under Sky_Presets. That means they will disappear if you reset preferences, so if you try that as troubleshooting, make sure you have the originals handy.

I reduced the number of skies in the Sky_Presets folder to about 20.  It didn't make any difference.  It was still extremely slow scrolling through them.

Kevin, you may be onto something.  They are averaging around 40 mb each.  I'm importing them into Photoshop as .psd files but it looks like they are being converted to .png during the import.  The skies that come with Photoshop are .jpg and much smaller.  When I get a chance, I might export all my skies as .jpg and try that.

Thanks for responding.  I don't see how it could be a permission problem.  The sky selection is working but extremely slow to scroll through them.  Everything else about my computer is pretty fast.

OK, odd. It's very snappy here, so I can't reproduce this (except that I'm a bit unhappy with the entire layout of this function, but that's another discussion).

Perhaps try to reset preferences if you haven't already. As I mentioned, have your original skies ready for reloading, and also save out all your actions and brushes.

The preferences file contains the entire app configuration, and corrupt prefs can cause highly unexpected and seemingly inexplicable behavior. Preferences are prone to corruption because they are rewritten on every application exit, as opposed to read-only program files. An irregular shutdown can corrupt them.

@D Fosse wondering if its the overall size/volume of images - @Jeff A. Goulden with 500 averaging at 40 mb a piece that is almost 19 GB of data to manage. I would suggest reviewing the preset asset and try to match the size and file format provided by Adobe.

Yes, but mine are pretty big too, full size from Sony a7r-series cameras.

In any case, it's not the full original psds that are loaded in Sky Replacement. They are stored as separate jpegs in Sky_Presets in the Photoshop settings folder. So I can't see any inherent reason it should be slow.

Kevin, you nailed it!!  This problem has been bugging me for months.  I cleared my preferences and then imported 363 skies as jpegs.  The total size of the Sky_Presets folder is now 1.38GB and the individual jpegs are around 2-4MB each.  I also stretched the pallet to make it more of a grid format instead of a linear format.  It seems to work fine now.  Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

Now I'm wondering if there is a better way to maintain the skies.  It seems like I have to have a file open in Photoshop before I can use Edit/Sky Replacement.  It would be nice if I could upload skies without having a file open.  In ON1 you do File/Manage Extras and it's much easier.
