Photoshop Text - Previous Layer Keeps Returning

Hi everyone.  I'm having a devil of a time with this.  I opened a new photo and when I click T for text to add words, a layer automatically appears in the layers column and text appears on the photo both from a previous project.  I can't make it go away.  Can anyone help please?  Joe
