Photoshop text took select existing text box

Hey!

So, ever since I updated Photoshop to the latest version, every time I use the text box tool to make a new text box on a new layer, it selects an existing text box on a lower layer. It doesn't matter if I tap or drag, it always selects the existing text layer.

I know I can hide the other text layers or lock it, but it's just inconvenient to keep doing that, and it used to be fine.

Can someone please help?

Hi

when you move your cursor to create a new text box it looks like this :

However if you move over an existing text box it will change to this :

If it does and you want a new text box rather than opening the existing - then just press shift to change to the text box cursor again and click to start drawing the new box - ( you will need to release shift once you start dragging)

Is there any way to just turn that off? I find it an unnecessary addition. Thank you for your (also quick) answer.
