Pixel Banding After Upload

Community Beginner ,
Jun 24, 2025 Jun 24, 2025

Hi guys,

I was working on a PDF portfolio and I usually "save as copy" and I compress the picture through it then add it to a keynote before exporting to PDF. Everything looks fine until I upload them to the drive. Once I upload the PDF to the drive the background gets pixel banding for some pictures that I took with the Nikon D750 and not for all the pictures. Any fix for this please?

@Haleem0101 hello. What "drive" are you uploading to? At first glance this looks like its been compressed to a lower quality image causing the banding. Have you reopened the file in PS to confirm the settings haven't changed?

Thank you for your prompt response

It's exported as a PDF so I Cannot check out the images in question seperately. I also upload the pdf to google drive.

The cause of banding is, by definition, insufficient bit depth.

Jpeg compression will selectively reduce bit depth to components in the data, below the nominal 8 bits per channel. Nearby values are encoded as chunks of one single value. That's how the file gets so small.

Some types of image will show banding more easily than others. Shallow gradients are particularly prone to visible banding.

So the only solution is to not compress said photos?

Try adding a little noise to the image before compressing. It may make the files a bit larger but can be very effective in hiding banding.

1.
Instead of "Save a Copy, you can go to Preferences > File Handling > File Saving Options:

  • Enable Legacy Save As
  • Do not append Copy to filename

2.

How do you compress the picture? Through PS or in the PDF joboptions? What are your settings?

3.

What is the purpose of using Keynote?

4.

Are you exporting to PDF from Photoshop or Keynote? Which joboptions do you use and have you customized them?

Hello Jane,

Thank you for your response. I actually figured it out, I only needed to save for web instead of saving as a copy.

As for your question about Keynote, It's just a matter of preference. I find it easier and more fluid than using any other programs.
