Place an image so it is 100% canvas height/width

When placing an image while the transform gizmo is still active, how do you set the image to be 100% of the height or width of the canvas? Typing in a % dimension simply gives you the percentage of the original image. Is using pixels the only option?

Do you have "Resize Image During Place" Checked in the preferences? That normally sizes the placed object to the size of the open file.

Resize during place preferences only scale placed smart object layer that are larger than canvas size to fit within the document canvas. You will see this on the Place Option transform bar. The Width and Height percentage will be set to the same percentage that is less then 100%. It does not matter what the preference resize during place is set to. Place will resize the image file image being placed in if the file print resolution does not match the document current resolution setting. The resize may be up or down in size. If the Smart object layer created is larger than the document canvas size then the Preference resize during place come into play. If the smart object layer created is larger than canvas size the smart object layer's associated transform will be adjusted to scale the layer to fit on canvas, The Actual smart object layer contents is still larger than canvas size the smart object layer is just scaled to fit on canvas.

IMO Place should not resize image because or the placed Image files Print resolution. Copy/paste does not resize images. Duplicating layer from one document to an other does not resize layers, Dragging and dropping layers between document does not resize image layers. Place resizing images just cause problems. The problems most likely caused Adobe to add the Preference resized during place To scale layer with large resized images to fit within the canvas.

Place's resizing of image based on the files print resolution setting is also why Adobe new Frame tool has problems. I just remove the Frame tool from the tool bar and disable its shortcut. I also dislike the way Frames are depicted in the Layers Palette. I have been framing image layers since CS2. Photoshop does not need a disfunctional Frame tool.

Place is a strange feature. Typing in a % dimension give you a percentages of the rendered smart object layer created which may or many not be the the same size as the original image. Place scales the originals image based on its Print DPI resolution and the Document its being Placed into Current Print resolution setting. If both DPI resolution are the same Place does not scale the originals image it will use the original images pixels. Also if the Smart Object layer created by place is Larger than Canvas size Photoshop will set the active Transform Dimension % setting to less than 100%. If your Photoshop Preferences is set to Adobe Default setting, Resize during Place. So if the smart Object layer was scaled to fit on canvas if you set the dimensions to 100% Width and Height the layer will be larger than canvas on at least one dimension. Which will be clipped by the documents canvas size. Also if you use the active transform controls to fit the image to the canvas you will distort the image if the Image and the document canvas have different aspect ratios.

I know this is simple, but the easiest way is to grab one of the corner handle bars and drag it to the edge. Holding down the Option key will drag it from the center. If you are working in an older version of PS then you will need to hold down the shift key to constrain it proportionally, or hit the link icon in the Options bar. If you are using a newer version then you don't have to hold down the Shift key.

It would be great if there was a Fit to Width or Height option that you could click. But only the Transform Options are available while the "gizmo" is still active and there is not an option for that!
