Place "Linked" .psd file as Smart Object. Updating issue

Participant ,

Hi all,

OK, so I'm placing Linked .PSD files into my document to ensure any changes on the linked .psd file apply to other files. I've just started using this technique for a specific job that requires many versions of a Doc but shares many elements.

I'm having an issue with the working file not updating when I do something simple like show/hide a layer or set transparency etc. I have to zoom in/out to get the doc to refresh to display any changes.

This only happens when I'm placing 'linked' .psds. If I use embedded smart objects it previews fine.

I tried altering GPU settings from advanced to basic to off, no change.

Any ideas?

I do not use a Mac or use linked smart object.  However when Adobe first implemented linked placed smart object layers I tested and seem to remember if an open document the had  a linked object would update. If I opened the linked file and changed and saved it. Not opening the object wit a double click in the layer palette. Use menu File>Open>LinkedPSD file. This still seem the be the way CC 2017 works on Windows.

Thanks for the follow-up JJMack. However, the issue is not about the linked file updating (yes, I have to select "Update Modified Content" in the layers panel too). It's about the layers not updating or displaying on the working document. Here's one I just opened and none of the layers are displaying even though they are on.

I'll make a new test on windows a new document the has never even been save.  After the linked object file been changed.  I'll save the new document. Then open that document.

Now I'll save and open the newdoc..

OK so this seems to have propagated.

All screen refresh/redraw is not updating and it's not specific to Linked files anymore (or more likely that the issue just began when I happen to be working with linked files). Any open file no has the same redraw issue. Toggling through Open GL settings and restarting photoshop makes no difference.

I'll run a hardware test on the Mac to see if anything's up. This is a new clean isntall of OS and Adobe CC.

OK so just to close this off. Performed a few steps and it seems to have fixed it (for now)

Boot Safe Mode to check if issue persisted in safe mode (It didn't) So I'm guessing Vid Card....

Reset P-Ram (this used to be a fix all 🙂

Reset Video Card

Killed all Startup items (related to another issue I spotted in the logs, not sure if that issue related to screen redraw performance but listed here as I did it)

Thanks all.

Issue is back again. Turning on/off layers does not reciprocate on the window. I have to zoom in/out for the layer to appear. I've tried playing around with Graphics Processor settings but the issue persists.

I wonder is there any way to track the issue down?
