Could you please post a complete screenshot with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?

How exactly did you create the png?

If this should actually be about the display of a layered file on Photoshop:

Does turning on Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Legacy Compositing and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

Thank you.

The Layers Panel’s icons are to small to make out the object well … as per jane-e’s excellent observation the issue may be the Smart Object itself.

What happens when you double-click it?

Hi Mark,

Zooming in on your Layers panel, it appears that the checkerboard is not transparency, but checkered pixels. I am going to venture a guess that you downloaded the mask from a stock website and the format is AI/EPS. Typically the Illustrator files will have the checkerboard pattern to indicate transparency, and that layer can be hidden or deleted in Illustrator. What you did (I think) was to place the Illustrator file into Photoshop.

You have two choices to get rid of the checkerboard (if I am on the right track):

  • Open the file in Illustrator and hide or delete the checkerboard layer. It may be inside a group. Open the Layers panel if you have trouble or ask again.
  • Select the face mask in Photoshop and add a Layer Mask to hide the checkerboard pattern. If you need help with this part, then ask again.

I apologize, but I can't resist saying, "Mask the mask."
