Printing white text on colored paper

New Here ,
Apr 24, 2008 Apr 24, 2008
I feel really silly asking this and I know it's something that I'm missing but I can't seem to get white text to print on colored paper. I've searched in several places but can't find a solution. I would greatly appreciate and help in solving this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Get some white paint and a brush, then paint the text in by hand.

Your printer has no white ink and cannot produce white by mixing its colors.

To print white on something colored you need to use opaque white ink or paint silk screen would be the way to go.

You can't print white on colored paper with an inkjet.

But you COULD print a colored background onto WHITE paper and leave the type "knocked-out" so that you see the type as white.

wr,

Remember that your desktop printer doesn't have white or metallic inks or pigments. You need to go to outside service providers for this and other special printing techniques.

(Or use Ann's suggestion for white.)

A canvas can be made the same size as the paper you are printing on. The canvas can be colored with the paint bucket. The picture as a background can be made almost invisible (or you can use more than one picture). The text can be enhanced with layer style and drop shadow, and again, the text can be white or any color you want - then print it with an inkjet borderless. I have done this several times. As usual, Ann pointed out the best solution.

Uses a lot of ink though...especially if you're printing a lot of them.

Re: Ed's comment...

If you're running a lot of 'em, you may find it more economical to let a quick-print shop (such as Kinko's) print them.

Neil, you and Ed are right. If you want to print 50 or 100 (or more), then Kinkos or Lazerquick will do it a lot cheaper than your ink jet. Ink jets were not made to do large batches of printing, or at least mine are not.

However, WR wanted to put white text on a colored background and there is a fairly easy way to do it using Photoshop or Photo Elements 6. Hopefully, we gave him some useful ideas!

But get a sample ON THE DAY. The coverage could (or will) be awful. And tell them you won't pay unless the coverage matches the sample (that you're happy with). I've seen some ocean scenes passed off as solid ink by salesmen, techs and tired operators...

there is no easy way to do this it involves having a third party lay opaque white ink on the colored paper. It can not be done on an inkjet. Also it can't be done with Elements which is not made for setting up print documents.

Thank you for all the responses. All of these methods I was aware of but for some reason I kept thinking I "should" be able to print white text. What I ended up doing was creating a "white box" area and filling in that with the information I wanted.

FYI, I am creating some band posters and wanted to use a commercial printer to print the generic poster and then have a way of adding my own text about the venue. (For small batches only)

Thanks again,

Robert

Buko,

If WR wants to overprint a previously printed document with white ink, then offset litho, letterpress, or silkscreen (preferably) by a legitimate printer would be the way to go. Or have rubdown decals or transfers prepared if the quantity is small.

But WR is not clear about the scenario.

Sorry it has nothing to do with the topic Neil. You don't need that brand of paper to print opaque white ink.

Buko,

Of course not -- although Wausau is a legitimate paper mill, there's a zillion brands out there, and I'm aware the copy in Ciana's post is nothing more than cut-'n'-paste marketing hype.

Hmmmm...just reread her Wausau post and I'm taking a tougher position now. I'm killing it.

At this point, we monitor Ciana's posts. She's been warned. If spamming/advertising happens again, she goes away.
