Question

Prints come out too large or too small

I am printing from Photoshop 2025(26.0) on an iMac (OS Sonoma V14.6.1, Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019) to an Epson SC-P700 printer.  I am printing an 8x12" image (both image and canvas size), centered on 13x19" paper, so there is plenty of room.  The image shows correct size in the Photoshop window, using the ruler.

  • If I specify SuperB/A3 Borderless paper, the print comes out oversized in both dimensions, approximately 1/4" over on the long edge.
  • If I specify SuperB/A3 without the Borderless option, the print comes out undersized, again by approximaetely 1/4".

I do not have the "scale to fit media" option checked.

Thoughts: I did previously have the "scale to fit media" option checked when printing test prints on letter sized paper but I can't see why this should have bearing now.  I have saved as a TIFF rather than Photoshop and run into the same problem.  I have open and closed and re-opened both Photoshop and the printer to no effect.  (I can't recreate the file from scratch since there was considerable editing.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  (This is driving me nuts since I have been using Photoshop and this printer for years without  issues.).

Your Photoshop settings look OK.

The only Epson printer driver setting that looks incorrect is the Borderless paper size since that will definitely scale up the image slightly, as expected. The non-borderless paper size is appropriate to choose for this job.

So the last mystery to solve is why it is printing slightly smaller if the non-borderless Super B/A3 paper size is selected.

I don’t think you should have to print from different software, this should be achievable in Photoshop. Your canvas size is so much smaller than the paper size that it should print at the exact size specified, it shouldn’t be scaled or cut off in any way even with the crop marks. I’ll think about that one a little more…

Conrad, thanks for your thoughtful response.  I still have not found the cause or solution.  I just printed another file (non-borderless) and it come out exactly as specified.    It is a problem that "crops" up occasionally and drives me nuts since it also happens on 13x19 paper which I generally use for final prints to go into mats that I reuse for various shows, so the output needs to be exact.  I'll try the suggestion from D Fosse to "Hold the spacebar when you click Print to delete all print metadata saved in the file," though I'm not particulalry hopeful.  Fortunately, it does not happen that often.

Hold the spacebar when you click Print to delete all print metadata saved in the file.

How does that work, it just flickers printer selection for me

I mean when you click Print from the Photoshop menu. Not when you're already in the Print dialog.

@Branch_Images "If I specify SuperB/A3 Borderless paper, the print comes out oversized in both dimensions, approximately 1/4" over on the long edge."

I have seen that when you set an Epson print driver to "borderless" or "edge to edge" it appears to slightly increase the image size, so as to "bleed" the image off the edge of the paper.

Personally, I'd like to turn this expansion off and have my image at the exact size I made it but it doesn't seem possible to do that.

It seems the only way to get exact size and borderless/edge to edge/bleed is to print on oversize media and trik after printing

If I specify SuperB/A3 without the Borderless option, the print comes out undersized, again by approximaetely 1/4"

do you mean it doesn't fill the media or that it is actually scaled? If borderless is NIOT selected then the printer will impose borders. If an image is sent too large it is generally cropped not automatically scaled.

I hope this helps

Have you tried exporting as a PDF?
I have found Preview is often better at printing than direct from application or even Acrobat.
