Problem opening ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) [2018]

My situation:

PC Windows 10 up to date

CC apps are all up to date.

Problem:

Can't open a raw file by clicking file -> open and click on a raw file.

jpg of psd file open fine in Photoshop.

Opening a raw file from the explorer by right clicking and choose open with, I get the same fault message

Opening from Bridge in any way doesn't work either

The message I get when trying to open a raw file is:

Could not complete your request because of a program error.

Using the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop doesn't work either, I get the message:

Could not complete the Camera Raw Filter command because of a program error

In Lightroom if I open the same raw file with Ctrl E the file opens nicely in Photoshop.

What I tried:

starting with no plugins

reset the preferences

starting windows in safe mode

used the (latest) camera raw installer

uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop

In your windows settings default app by file type. Are your RAW file type like CR2, CRW, Nef, ORF, etc set to Photoshop? Does PS Menu Help>About Plug-ins>Camera Raw... Show ACR is installed at the latest version?

Normally I have the .nef set to be opened in Windows Photo Viewer, changing it makes no difference.

Two things you could try

Disable this option in the Camera Raw setting, in Photoshop go to Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw, restart PS

If that doesn't help try resetting Photoshop preferences

All I can say is I have windows 10, Photoshop CC 2018 19.1.5 and the latest ACR 10.4. When I double click on a .NEF file in File Explorer Photoshop CC 2018 starts and ACR Plug-in's UI open with the Nef file open in its UI.

Today I uninstalled all CC apps and removed all settings, restarted the pc and ran the AdobeCreativeCloudCleanerTool and restarted again.

Then I reinstalled the CC desktop application and Photoshop. I started Photoshop and tried to open a nef file and I got the same problem, not opening Adobe Camera Raw and the message: Could not complete your request because of a program errorCould not complete your request because of a program error.

I am getting a bit desperate. The only way I can open a raw file is through Lightroom Classic.

If you removed Photoshop from you system and removed your user ID Photoshop preferences then ran Adobe Cleaner to clean all traces of Photoshop and then install Photoshop and it does not install and run correctly I would say you need Adobe Customer Support to get Photoshop installed on your machine correctly. Try Chat it may not be easy is there anything that is uncommon installed on you machine hardware/software?

Can't think of anyting uncommon installed. I will run a few scans to rule out any nasty bugs. 🙂

What camera are you using? If you use the Adobe DNG Converter on your Raw images will Photoshop open them? Have you been able to open RAW images in the past?

Also have you tried using 'Open As'

Then make sure you choose the Camera Raw option

Yes I was able to open the nef files from my Nikon D750 before and yes I tried the context menu to open the nef files. I want my nef files and don't want to convert them to dng.

Open as doesn't work either.

My work flow is importing the nefs in Lightroom and do most of my editing there. Sometimes I just want to open a nef from the explorer or Photoshop and because ACR doesn't open I have to open them first in Lightroom and I can't use the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop.

are you using the software that comes with your Nikon?-there are known compatibility issues between ACR and the Nikon software-it's use either one or the other for processing. Try downloading a sample .nef file from here

If Photoshop opens that file then your problem is file modification into a format ACR cannot read.

I am sure my nef files are ok, Photoshop could not open one of your nefs either Also raw files from Canon and Fuji won't open. I can open them perfectly in Lightroom.

Adobe Camera Raw will not open, whatever I try.

Photoshop version is 19.1.15

Camera Raw filter is 10.4.0976

yup your Nef image is fine and I can open it easily. You need to appreciate that we need to eliminate all the possibilities to narrow down what the exact problem is.

So we now know your Photoshop install is faulty. I think the next step is to uninstall and reinstall Photoshop using the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool. This tool is much more efficient than a simple uninstall. Remember to restart the computer after it removes Photoshop.

OK can you check the 'file association' for .Nef files. Right click a .nef and select properties. Press the change button and make sure Adobe Photoshop 2018 is selected and press OK-see if that makes a difference..

There are no problems with file association or corrupted files, only ACR in Photoshop.

OK I'm out of ideas anyhow. I hope you get this sorted out. I had read the entire thread but have been doing this long enough to know that OPs don't always follow instructions and so repeating things can be useful. As JJ said earlier you should use the 'Chat Console' as that may be your only solution.

I have read a lot of people had sort of the same problems on windows with the Camera Raw 10.2. So I think it has something to do with the latest Camera Raw. I will look for an older version and see if it will solve my problem.

Bingo!!

I downloaded CameraRaw 9.12.1_win and installed it and bingo, Photoshop works as a charm again!! So there is definitely something wrong with the CameraRaw 10.4 in combination with my PC or Photoshop version.

It is however a pity Adobe only offers a camera raw installer with the latest Camera Raw included. It would be better is you could download whichever version so if something goes wrong, you have the option to install a previous version.
