problem with eyedropper tool

hi,

when I choose a color with the eyedropper tool, it changes the background color instead of the primary color, why is that? please help, it drives me mad

Look in the Color panel, and make sure the Foreground color is selected:

The highlighting is rather subtle, and easy to miss.

That actually doesn't have anything to do with it and only works in the color panel, not for the eyedropper. 

 

You have to hold down opt / alt to select the background color - do you have a key sticking? I would reset the preferences.
