Problem with stroke

Hi, I've recently started using Photoshop cc from Photoshop cs5. The following works in cs5 but I can't make it work in cc:

I have a file with multiple layers. On one layer, I have an image with white surrounding it. I select the white space with the magic wand tool then choose Select > Inverse. So far so good - I've got my image selected, now I want a white border/stroke. I go to Edit but Stroke is greyed out... never used to happen in cs5...

Any help appreciated, thanks.

    Correct answer Norman Sanders

Is the layer a Smart Object?

Assuming that is the problem and you rasterize and then Stroke it in white, it would be a white stroke in a white area and you would not see it.

Ah, yes, I think it is - mystery solved; thank you, Norman :-)

To clarify, the white stroke is meant to show on a full image underneath, so no problem there - it was the fact that the image was a Smart Object as you suggested. Thanks again.

    Happy to help.

    Good luck.
