Program Error upon opening any file (24.7.1 / 25.0)

After having updated PS to the newest 25.0, I couldn't open any kind of files in Photoshop and upon trying, I got the error:

"Could not complete your request because of a program error."

By any file, I mean I tried opening .psd, .png, .tga, .jpg - and all of them prompted the same error. After having tried opening a file, pressing X on the window would prompt the same error, as would Alt+F4. To shut down the program I would have to use the Task Manager.

I tried re-installing, restarting the computer, reinstalling my graphics drivers, updating my preferences and everything else that was suggested on the Adobe help page. Reverting to 24.7.1 did not work either.

What ultimately ended up working was reverting to 24.7 or earlier versions of PS.

I have the exakt same problem. And i have tried to do everything from clearing all settings to original ( New). Updating everything that can be updated. Disabled GPU. Reinstalling without imorting previous settings.

The thing is it worked fine for several days but this morning when i started it all of a sudden it stopped working. and i have made no updates or installed anything on my Mac since yesterday when it worked fine.

My system is:
Mackbook Pro 2018
2.9Ghz 6 Core i9

Radeon Pro 560X

32Gb 2400MHz DDR4

MacOS Ventura 13.5.2

Hi!

We are sorry to hear that you are having this issue. Here is some information about Photoshop and Ventura that might be helpful. There are definitely some issues that still need to be resolved: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-and-macos-ventura.html

Hi!

I would suggest not going to a beta, but going back to a version of Photoshop that was working for you. Do you have the previous version? If so, continue using that until the bugs get worked out.

I also use Photosop for work, and I always keep previous versions of Photoshop so I am not hindered from getting my work done. If you haven't already, make sure and turn off Auto-update. Then when you do update, make sure to select the option to create a new install of the program and leave the previous version in tact.

Yes I went back to 24.7 and it worked first go and then it would not create new file, and getting the same error.
I am just destroyed.

I wish I did as you and kept the old version instead of removing it.

Any version I roll back to works for first time close it down and open it again and I am faced with the error again.
%appdata%, removed prefences and even regedit to remove any traces of all the version that were installed.

Hi!

Have you tried turning off your Graphics Processor? Go to Preferences>Performance and uncheck "Use Graphics Processor." Then close Photoshop and open it up again. If you are getting that error in different versions, then it's not just the latest version that is the culprit.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then you can always turn the Graphics Processor back on. Here is some info on it: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html

One other option you could try is to "Diable Native Canvas." Go to Preferences>Technology Preferences and check "Disable Native Canvas."

Here is a thread from another post that gives an explanation, and you will have to make sure your graphics processor is turned on.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/what-is-native-canvas-and-what-happen...

Let us know if either of those help or if you are still having the issue.

Hi Michelle,

Ok I disabled GPU , and checked native cavanas.
25.0 is working, I have the latest Nvidia Drivers and running (2x) 3090ti(s). which was fine before.
Is there some weird thing that causes me not able to use GPU even on older builds now such as 24.x?

Confused to why this is happening now.
Thank you for the help I hope to beable to go back to turning it back on in the future.

I'm losing patience and worst of all, there's no alternative. I've been wotking with Photoshop for 20 years, and we're about where we were in the late 90s. So much for boomers. I don't need AI; I just need to be able to open yesterday's docs. Every day begins with the need to reinstall Photoshop. And what does the firm have to say about it? That they are deeply sorry about the problem.
