Program Error

I have several jpg images that when I attempt to open in PS 24.1.0 receive an error message  "Could not complete your request because of a program error.". My research says to use the User-diagnostics plug in but that seems to pertain to an earlier version of PS? The learn how to fix icon that appears with the program error window doesn't provide the info I need to resolve. Any thoughts? Running windows 10

Hi @Heirloom Bob, sorry to hear about the problem! Sounds strange. Is it only happening with this certain batch of jpg images, or with any jpg you try to open? Are you opening them from within Photoshop or by clicking on the file? Where are the files located? On a local or external drive, or on the cloud? If you try to open them from Bridge, does the same error message pop up? Do you want to post one or DM me with the file and I'll see if I have the same issue? I'm running Windows 10, Photoshop 24.1 Release.

External drive

Same issue in Bridge but i thought you were onto something there. 🙂

Okay, thanks for that info. This may have to do with the external drive. Did you try disconnecting and reconnecting it?  Restarting Windows? Also, I don't see an attachment file yet. Can you try again?

Thanks, @Heirloom Bob I got the Dropbox link. I can't open them either. Just a WAG, but based on the file names, these look like they could be Nikon Disk ID files that were converted or saved to JPG the wrong way (DSC04681.JPG and DSC04681.JPG). I tried several ways to open them and used two different repair tools for fixing corrupted JPG files, but I couldn't open them. Each file is about 8.5 MB. How did you acquire the images? Do you know what type of content or picture they are supposed to contain? Can you go back to an original source? Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you on this one!

The file name DSC04681.JPG on a Sony RX10M3, as a jpg file. The naming structure is the same for all shots in this group and only some of them have this issue. Most are fine. They are all Bald Eagle shots fwiw. Downloaded into Lightroom via card reader. Lightroom also can't open the images. What repair tools did you attempt? I am testing EaseUS Recovery at the moment.

@Heirloom Bob, thanks for explaining the source as Sony RX10M3. Did you use the built-in Wi-Fi to transfer files, by any chance? I tried Stellar Repair for Photo, Kernal Photo Repair, and another free online tool. After a first process fail, the programs ask for a comparison file from the same device, which I don't have. I also looked at the data using Hex Workshop. The first line in both files reads, “Data Recovery Labs?????” I'm thinking the files failed on reading, there was a defective download, or corrupted memory card… something like that.

But it would have been fantastic to see a photo of a bald eagle had I been successful! I take it you were never able to open these files from the beginning? Did you see live previews of the shots on the camera monitor as you were shooting? Were you shooting in camera RAW or only JPG?

@Heirloom Bob I meant to add that you can use the Photoshop Error Diagnostic Plug-in with 2023 Release. Instructions are here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/program-error-opening-psd.html#plugin

The results of running it on your file only returns this:

Photoshop Error information
Code: -1
Text: because of a program error
Message: Could not complete your request because of a program error.

Bob, maybe try copying a few of those Jpegs to the main hard disk then see if the issue persists.

I hope this helps

If you double click on photo does it give you an error code or just does not open? Can you save it in Lightroom and change the name? Maybe it will give you different results.

@Jumpenjax Lee, my replies likely crossed with yours but @Heirloom Bob sent me two test files via PM yesterday. Unfortunately, they gave me the same error originally described in the post and here is a screenshot:

JEL_0-1672330983093.png

I've tried changing file extensions, opening with Bridge, Photos, and Lightroom, and ran them through three repair tools without success. In looking at the hex info, they appear to be corrupted beyond repair. However, any other ideas you have that we might try would be great.

Is it possible to attach one of the problem children (photo) to see if someone can open the file?
