PS 2020 Saving file freezes and unable to close program

New Here ,
Nov 06, 2019 Nov 06, 2019

Using the latest PS 2020 and while editing something from Lightroom Classic the file will be stuck while saving at any %. Obviously I can't close the file or the program while it's "saving" so I am forced to force close the program losing all my progress on the file.

Currently latest Photoshop 2020 and Lightroom Classic on a Macbook Pro 13" 2017.

I wish the update notes would say specifically what it is supposed to fix.

I ran the update yesterday and the saving issue persists however I have found a work around as the saving issue seems to only occur when you "save" and that rewrites the original file. If you "save as" to a different folder or the same folder changing the file name the file saves without any issue. Hope it works for you all, it's working perfectly for me.

I had 3 calls today with Adobe about this issue.  In non-technical terms, the last representative told me that my files coming over from LR to PS 2020 were 16 bit, where in PS 2019 they were automatically converted to 8 bit when I went from LR to PS.  I'm working on a i5 processor which I was told is struggling to keep up with the edits (my files don't have more than 6 layers with 1 being portrait pro). He told me to change the files to 8 bit and see if that would help.  Also they changed my permissions to read+write. Turned off saving in the background. Let's hope this helps when I am editing tomorrow.  A 3 hour task turned into 8 hours today!

One call today, so fix implemented did not work. Right now solution is to save file as .psd instead of .tif. Computer still froze and I had to restart twice. I BEGGED.the representative to remove PS2020 and reinstall 2019, but she did not. I'm afraid to uninstall and reinstall for fear that i will cause other issues. I hope someone from Adobe is following this thread.

I gave up. Uninstalled PS2020 and reinstalled PS2019. Hopefully an update will address in the future.

I tried uninstalling PS 2020 and reinstalling PS 2019 but that didn’t help either. My problem ended up being my external drive. I had moved to a new external drive because my photo collection outgrew the previous one, and I neglected to format the drive for the MAC OS when I first started using it. It seemed to be working just fine and no warning reminded me to check the formatting on the drive - and for a while it did work fine, and did save my PS work, that’s what was so confusing. Had this problem occurred immediately when I first started using the drive it would have been easier to figure out. Eventually I figured it out that I needed to format it to the MAC file system - and that solved all my problems. Not sure if your issue involves and external drive or not, so this may not help you.

I'm working on an i5 running 2 displays so your issue may be RAM, dont know what you're at but you need bare minimun 16mb. The other thing is that if you save as to a differnet folder than the original file or rename it instead of save, the problem goes away. Hope this helps

Thanks! I will try the renaming to save.  Do you have to do rename for every time you save it only when you save to the new folder? Do you go back and import the final file to Lightroom?

I haven't tried, beware it freezes if you try to convert to a smart object so you'll need to save the file with layers.

Just an update.  I called Apple support and they had me reinstall Catalina (10.15.2).  I also spent some time again on the phone with Adobe and they had me reinstall PS 2020 (after reinstalling Catalina) and remove PS2019.  It's been 2 days and no issues.

im running an i9 with 40gb ram - my files can get rather large.. dont see it as a ram issue ( in my case anyway) the solution that worked for me was using ps2019 and saving to desktop as opposed to external drive or same folder on server.

(always save as .tiff with changed filename)

i was losing all my layers and recovered file (in one layer) was in random states of retouching after 99% hang.

i tried using ps2020 this am - had some actions i was too lazy to install on ps2019 - so i gave it a whirl.

(i installed latest update to 2020 on friday)

NOPE! hung at 92%

i'd say just stay away from 2020 at all costs if youre having this issue until adobe addresses it directly.

Same problem appeared last night. 4 PS files of around 300Mb. All at 99% saving. Using Photoshop 21.0.3 on Mac OSX Catalina 10.15.3 . And if you force quit it flattens your psd to a single later of interference.

One thing I did notice is that the path is showing for some files in the open recent list, rather than just filename. That jumped out at me. I've also very recently upgraded hard drive from Mac Fusion Drive to full SSD if that makes any difference.

I have the same issue. All the time. Whenever I am editing an image in photoshop that is also being used by After Effects, if it's a fairly large file, it will predictably hang up at 99% when saving. And then when I am forced to force quit, the file is completely corrupted and destroyed. I usually have to start over, hours of work lost, completely inexcusable. I can't trust this program anymore. I've had weird bugs with many of the adobe 2020 programs.

I just updated my photoshop to the latest version, in case the bug was fixed, and the problem happened twice more in the last hour. Photoshop is unusable if this isn't fixed, I have only so many hours of my life to sink into this.

I agree. Fix it now. It happens to me -every- single - time- I try to use the software now. And every time it takes me by surprise because I've used photoshop for a decade without a problem . So every single time I lose hours of work. Now I'm trying to figure out how to do a job, and I think I may have to "save as" new versions of the file every five minutes in case photoshop eats my file. This is not software I can use.

Would also like to add- every time this happens photoshop won't reopen again until I restart my computer. extra frustrating, when I am using a brand new mac book pro and the latest update of photoshop.

I am currently redoing more work because this happened to me again. When will this problem be fixed so I can stop being afraid of using photoshop?

I Had this issue before and called support. They figured out the problem was that I was saving my work to external hard disk. Hard disk propperties was set as custom. After the hard disk properties have been changed that my name from computer had all the rights on hard disk read and write I did not have this issue again. All works good!

Interesting. This seems like a promising lead, actually, since I do use external drives. I will look into it.
