PS 2024 - Right click opening from LR creates an image that appears to have color profile error

Thank you very much for your help. I’ll experiment with ColorNavigator but I’ve found a couple of satisfactory workarounds.

I was mainly interested in testing the generative fill tool, which promises to be a handy way of removing unwanted objects, but is light years away from creating seamless and sharp expansion of landscape photos.

A good thing, I think. I hope it never progresses to that stage, but I suspect it will.

Can you try to set ColorNavigator to make a version 2 and matrix-based* profile?

By default ColorNavigator makes v4 and table (LUT)-based profiles. Either of those two can be problematic in some situations. I haven't seen any issues in my own testing, but we hear about it often enough that I stick to v2 matrix myself. It's always safer.

*ColorNavigator calls matrix profiles "Gamma value (EOTF)" which is just another name for transfer function/curve.

I forgot to add that if I open a tiff file stored in LR, it displays correctly. The problem or bug is only related to Nikon NEF files.

I am using an Eizo 24" calibrated with DataColor Spyder X purely for photo processing. My principal monitor is a Dell 27".

Images that I right click to open in PS open on myu Eizo.

I have 6 color profiles available for my Eizo, including my custom calibration. However, all of them display a dull image unless I alter the color profile setting in system settings on my Mac Mini M1.

Once I do that, I can select from all six Eizo color profiles either in settings or on my Eizo.

Most importantly I think, if I turn off my GPU, the image opened on my Eizo displays correctly.

It's clear to me that there is some disconnect that is disabling color management and that fiddling with color profiles in settings instantly reconnects the color profile.

Thank you again. Any suggestions on where I should go from here? Process without the GPU on? Use the clumsy workaround of changing the color profile setting on my Mac Mini and then aligning it with the correct color profile in PS?

It's all a bit of a drag!

From the way you're describing it, that sounds like the display color management chain is breaking at some point. A ProPhoto file displayed without color management will be very desaturated and dull, as well as darker than it should.

Display color management is performed in the GPU. That's where the conversion from the document profile into the monitor profile is executed. What is your monitor profile? Are you using a calibrator? What monitor? What GPU?

If you set Lightroom to open into Photoshop as Adobe RGB or sRGB (depending on what monitor you have), do you see the same shift? My guess is not.

In MacOS, the GPU driver is integrated into the operating system and is updated with it. In addition, new versions of Photoshop will make new calls to the GPU with new functions, and so latent bugs can come to the surface.

In short - this could be either a GPU bug or a bad monitor profile that causes the GPU to stall.
