Question

PS CS6 files crush my middle old Mac with System 10.4.6

…but not the even older G4 with System Mac OS 9.2.

The actual situation: I installed Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium on my "Mac mini (End 2014)" two weeks ago and since then I tried to solve the problem on my own. Does not work.

Therefore I would very, very much like to know why the Finder in my G5, System 10.4.6, does not answer anymore when I put in the USB Stick and -important- open the folder with a Photoshop CS6 File in it- no matter wether it is a Jpeg just like the attached one, a PNG or whatever. The G5 does not even show the file.

Nothing happens. No error xy shows up. Nothing.

Thank You!!

PS: Compability in PS CS6 is set to: always

If the finder crashed or acted up with jpegs or pngs then fonts aren't the problem since those file formats are flattened so there are no text layers in those files.

Is there a particular reason you never updated your Tiger install on your G5 to 10.4.11 rather than staying on 10.4.6?

In fact Software update still works in Tiger if you have an internet connection for your G5.

If not apple still has the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC) available on their website.

Here's what i've found so far:

1. Files saved from photoshop cs6 13.0.6 on macOS Mojave 10.14.6 in psd, tif, jpeg and png don't crash the finder on a Quicksilver running Mac OS X 10.4.11, but the thumbnails do not show in finder or on the desktop, except if you click on the file in colunm view, them finder shows a preview. They do however show in Bridge CS3 and open fine Photoshop cs3. Also files saved with save for web in photoshop cs6 work fine and show the thumnails.

2. Files saved from photoshop cs6 on MAC OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard do not crash the 10.4.11 finder and also the thumbnails do show in finder.

3. Mac OS 9 on the same Quicksilver  handles both sets of files without any crashing, however just icons in finder, which is normal for macs before os x. Photoshop 7 and it's file browser build the thumbnails just fine.

4. Files save from photoshop cc 20.0.6 on macOS Mojave 10.14.6 work just fine in 10.4.11 showing the thumbnails, so adobe did some work on the file handling in newer photoshop versions to compensate for changes in the mac os regarding thumbnails.

So i would say there are both bugs in photoshop cs6 and later versions of the mac os. I think around the time of cs6 apple was dropping resource forks from the os, so that could have something to do with it.

Hi Jeff, I just made an update to 13.0.6 but it doesn't help. Thank you very much for all your infos and suggestions!! Since I bought CS6 two weeks ago I did not even have an idea of dumb problems like this one. I'm kinda disappointed of Adobe. One question: might the problem have anything to do with the Adobe fonts? I am a font confuser… 😉

You bought CS6 2 weeks ago ! Not from Adobe, CS6 has not been sold for years. I sincerely hope you managed to get a genuine copy as most sold these days are pirated and come with both bugs and free malware.

Is photoshop cs6 updated to 13.0.6?

You can see by going in photoshop to Help>System Info and looking at the top line.

If not try Help>Updates in photoshop.

I don't think you have mentioned the file size. Perhaps it is too large.

Its NOT going to work. Odds are the thumbdrive is formatted exFAT which OS X 10.4 cannot read.

OP, you can try using File Sharing to connect the computers. That's the most likely to work. You might also update the G5 to 10.4.11 which was the last release of 10.4, but its still hopelessly outdated.

Try zipping the file(s) by right clicking and selecting Compress, which makes a zip.

Then transfer that with the usb stick and on the G5 double click to uncompress.

On OS 9 you can open the zip with stuffit expander 7.03

One suggestion: don't ever open from a USB stick. That has been shown to cause problems in every system of every age.

What happens if you copy the file from USB stick to desktop (using Finder) and open it?

Hi, as I wrote the file does not even show up when I stick the USB in. The system crashes immediately when I open the folder. It does not do that in any other case. Just with these dumb PS CS 6 file. Thank You!

There are many new things since 10.4, including new ways to format disks. Perhaps you can format the USB stick using Disk Utility in 10.4, and then write it on another system.

OS X 10.4 is ancient and long since unsupported. I wouldn't expect to be able to move files between a current Mac system and something that old. You can probably get file sharing to work but it could be the file system or capacity of the USB thumbdrive.

This has nothing to do with Adobe.
