PS- Layers Not Blending Properly

I'm having a issue with blending layers in Ps. As you can see by the images I submitted. My OS is Windows 11 & Ps ver. 24.2.1.358. I had the newest version of Ps but went back to this version to see if I still have had the problem & I did. I have another pc with Windows 10 & this version (24.2.1.358) & it works fine. Its my workhorse, just wanted to build a small form factor pc to take up less room. 

When blending layers 100% Hardness & 100% Opacity it takes mutiple clicks/swipes to acheive the desired result. I also get this Hao affect as you can see with a swipe of the brush, very strange. I checked all the settings in Ps and they are identical to my other pc thats working. This is a newly built pc and other then problems in Ps its pretty fast & works ok, just not with photoshop. I took out the gpu and I still have the same issue.

PC Specs: ASUS B660i, i7-12700K, Windows 11, Corsair DDR5 64GB 5200Mhz, 'C' Drive Samsung 980 Pro PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 1TB, EVGA GTX 1650 Super, H100i Elite AIO, Corsair PSU SF750. 

My GPU came with a gaming driver and I installed a studio driver instead, had issues when all fired up so went back to a gaming driver and still had same problem.  

Really at a loss here and could really use some help. Any ideas?

Hi @Jp_508 First gaming drivers are not supported - change back to your Studio driver and make sure they are up to date.

Next go to Photoshop Preferences/Technology Preview and check “Disable Native Canvas”. Relaunch PS if that does not work go back to preferences and check “Use Older GPU Mode (2016)”. Relaunch PS.

If that still does not resolve, go to Photoshop Help Menu/System Info and copy/paste details in a reply. Post only once as the system takes time to process the large amount of data.

Wow, this is an interesting problem! We re sorry you are running into it. I can barely make out the Options bar in your screen shot, is the Brush mode set to Normal? And can you show another screenshot of your image with your brushes panel open so we can see the settings?

Kevin, I re-installed the studio driver and followed through on your instructions, it did not correct the problem. I went to System Info and saw the blue detailed hightlighted verbage, once I hit copy where do I post it? It didn't take me anywhere. Do I paste in our converstion or is there another place I need to post. I've had Ps issues in the past with errors & I was able to send in a post from the dialog box that popped up. Please advise...Thanks Jerry

@Jp_508 Aha! You have two GPUs one underpowered (Intel 770) and your main one.

I did have an issue when I first disabled the intel gpu, internet went out completed. And I was plugged into the main gpu. Tried angain & it stayed on but Ps would not open. I restarted and it came back. I tested a few images putting the gpu to the test and all performed ok...so far so good. I never would have found the issue with the intel gpu being under powered. Everything I've read say they can work together so I'm surprised it was giving me a problem. I have both activated on my other pc and been working fine for years & the cpu is a Intel i9-9900k. Any thoughts as to why would be appreciated, that's how I learn. Thanks again, Jerry

Hi @Jp_508 in general Photoshop cannot take advantage of two GPUs - they compete. Not saying this is what was going on with yours, but having the underpowered avavilable means it could conflict. Hence the page from Adobe explaining how to resolve. As PS upgrades go - they are becoming more GPU dependent so the issues could start to become more noticeable.

Thanks for the explaination, I've learned a lot. It seems to be working fine right now. I monitor my cpu & gpu temps & usage in my tray using HWiNFO64. Before disabling intel 770 I noticed extreme changes in temps and usage, after disabling intel 770 they have become more stable & what I'm use to seeing on my other pc. So yeah it did make a difference. Thanks again for your help.

Hi, one thing to try first is to disable your intel GPU: this issue is often caused by conflicting GPU drivers, see step 7 in this help document: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html#GPUandgraphicsdrivertrouble...
Also, is the brush tip a default one, is the center really white? are your FG/BG colors default? (hit D) if the brush was very small, when scaled, could it have the stairsteps, is that the issue exactly, I guess that you mean Halo, instead of Hao?

You could try also to reset the brush tool, via a right-click on its tool icon in the option bar.

If this happens again I will definitely check the brush settings first. I've been using Ps since 2015 and never had brush issue settings change, whether it be Adobe updates or building a new pc. However I did add a new free plugin, TKActions from the website. (I already have Lumenzia & wanted to check out something new) But it deactivated all my custom actions I created, so I uninstalled it. Guess it was the trial version only and couldn't figure out how to keep my actions & TKActions operational at the same time. I did go on my Adobe Creative Cloud & saw it was there also so I gave it a try again, it was a simpler more scaled down version from the first download, my actions stayed active. I would consider purchasing the one on the website but have concerns it might happen again. Thanks again for your support.

Michelle, It was in the brush settings the whole time, somehow it selected 'Wet Edges'??? I never made that selection. When I originally installed Ps back in Jan 2023 it was just fine, and only last week when I updated to the newest version I started seeing it so I went back a version and still had it. 

While using Ps I am constantly hittings keys (sometimes 2 or more at the same time by accident) and maybe that changed it or the update changed it. Sometimes we just overlook the obvious solutions and go right to bugs, hardware, &/or software issues. Thanks for your help....Jerry

Wow, that was quick, looks like I have 2 issues here, I will check it out what you sent me. Yeah I know my cpu has one built in but this has never happened before. I've built 3 in the last few years and never had this issue and all had intl gpu's. Thanks for finding that for me. 

Michelle texted me and mentioned looking at brush settings so I did and have 'Wet Edge' selected in brush settings as well. Never selected it so it happened either by doing updates or at times I hit a couple keys at the same time and it inadvertantly messed up my brush settings.
