PS masking brushes?

masking and brush types.  looking to correct faces in group photo, when I select the brush I am defaulting to the brightness adjustment, and I am unable to mask or unmask layers.  How do I get to correct brush?

Can you show us a screen shot of your image window with the layers and brushes panel open so we can see your settings?
