PS transform/zoom stops working after 20mins or so

I've got this problem where Photoshop gradually 'dies' - the scrubbly zoom begins to go weird and finally stops working. Transform edits just don't respond, the frame comes up but I cannot move the handles. I have the brush toolbar undocked and it flickers. There are some other things. All of this happens after about 20 mins or so, all I can do is restart PS and work for 20 mins, repeat.

I've been using PS for 20 years to do matte painting and digital painting, I'm very familiar with the app but this problem, argh I dunno. My performance settings:

AMD Ryzen 9 5950x

Nvidia 3080ti

64GB RAM

Windows 10

Hi @Miked08 I could have sworn I saw a second GPU but I may have gotten mixed up with another users report.

Its odd that the system works but then starts to fail after a period of time and not normal with PS (obviously).

Here are some things to try in order:

1. Go to Photoshop Preferences/Technology Preview and check “Disable Native Canvas”. Quit and relaunch PS.
2. Go to Preferences/Performance and turn off "Mulithreaded Compositing". Quit and relaunch.

Any improvement after either change? If no, time to rule out your GPU corruption - Go to Preferences/Performance and turn off "Use Graphics Processor" Restart PS. If this solves the issue after 20 minutes, then it points to something with your graphics card specifically.

Number 2 worked! Mulithreaded Compositing was to blame. I've now been working for several hours with no issues. Hopefully there aren't any downsides to this being off, I haven't noticed any. Thanks for the many suggestions 🙂

I was using the game driver so great suggestion there but switching to the studio driver hasn't helped. I restarted after install, checked it was using the studio driver, started PS and after 20 mins or so got the same issues. This time not being able to select with the rectangular marquee tool, I draw a box but it instead draws a very different box somewhere else on the canvas.

What did you mean by disabling the MS Render engine? Thanks

Turning off your GPU limits you from doing anything that requires your graphics card which is most of the newer features - neural filters, liquify, remove tool, etc. It's a pretty drastic measure that should be your last option.

Did you try to disable the MS Render engine?

I unchecked 'use GPU' and I think this works, at least I've been in a PS file for over an hour now and no graphical glitches have shown up. On balance there are so many things that I miss so (for me) it's even worse than my current problem. Great suggestions though, I guess the 3080ti GPU is to blame. The drivers are up to date but other than that obvious suggestion I don't know what else to do.

Hi @Miked08 update your graphics card driver and make sure you are using the Studio version not Game Ready.

since your other specs are nice, one option is to see if you can rule out the GPU as being an issue. You can just uncheck "use graphics processor" and work as usual for 20+ minutes, and see if the problems still occur.

Hi @Miked08 first try going to preferences/tools and turn off overscrolling.

Next, go to Photoshop Help Menu/System Info and copy/paste details in a reply. Post only once as the system takes time to process the large amount of data.
