PSB file with multible artboards - unable to select layer by clicking on it from canvas

I frequently work with PSB templates comprised of several artboards representing different sized image croppings.  Each artboard contains a layer with a smart object.

Up until earlier this week, I was able to select the smart object layer within each art board by simply clicking on it from the canvas (not from the layer panel).

But now, I have to either select the layer from the layer panel, or I have to use CTRL-Click to select the layers from the canvas.

This started happening on all of my templates, not just one file. I already tried updating my version of Photoshop CC, restarted, rebooted, all that.

This is slowing my workflow down tremendously. Is there a way to go back to being able to select layers from the canvas directly??

Thanks

I wonder if you somehow were using the option to Auto Select Layers, and then unchecked it.

If that's the case - you can re-check that option when on the selection tool, OR you can choose to select your layers by control/cmd clicking the item with the selection tool, which should select the item, and jump you to the correct layer.

If this is not the case and the issue is still happening, have you reset your preferences? Preferences in Photoshop

It was the auto-select checkbox that was unchecked. Probably clicked on it by accident. @S_Gans thank you so much for pointing me to the solution!
