I have a bunch of PSD files that, as far as I can tell, somehow converted to PST files on their own. For example one of my files named:
"elephant.psd"
and now it is called:
"elephant_psd.pst"
When I try to open them from my browser I get the error:
"Outlook data files must be opened from within Outlook"
When I create a copy of the file, change the extension back to PSD and then try to open it from Photoshop I get the following errro:
"Could not open 'elephant.psd' because it is not a valid Photoshop document"
Some notes about my files - some of them are on my google drive and they are unaffected. Of the files on my local drive there are two categories: files converted to PST asnd files that are still PSD allso error out when trying to topen.
Has anyone run into this type of thing before? Any idea what may have caused it and how I might fix it?

I've no idea what has caused it, although it does sound like you have run a batch rename function.
You should be able to rename each file back to its original name and extension in Windows then it should open, provided that it is only the name that has changed.
