"could not initialize photoshop because an unexpected end-of-file error was encountered" [2017]

Never had any problems with my photoshop application, however, recently I haven't even been able to open the programme. It comes up with an error box saying "could not initialize photoshop because an unexpected end-of-file error was encountered". After looking on the forums and online for a solution, I am stumped.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the programme but it still won't open.

How do I fix this

Thanks

Correct answer
  • Click the Start button (Windows XP users should then click Run).
  • Type %appdata% and press Enter.
  • Open the Adobe folder.
  • Open the Adobe Photoshop CS5 (or similar name) folder.
  • Delete the “Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings” (or similar name) folder.

Hello, I had also faced the same problem many times, but today I came here to find any solution that could help but all in vain. Then I started to tried open the curroupt file in all softwares one by one. Then Jackpot, the said file opened in corel photopaint and then I export my file again in PSD and you know what all the layers and colors were as previous.

Hi gemmaf27461182,

I have had the same problem today and have found a solution on the Adobe PS preferences help page:

  • Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.

Note: Using the keyboard shortcut, preference files for custom shortcuts, workspaces, and color settings will also be reset to default.

Hope this helps

What OS?

What version of Photoshop?

Any error message?  If so, what exactly does it say?
