"There is a problem with generator"

Just updated All creative cloud apps to the 2019 versions. When I open photoshop I get the following error: "There is a problem with Generator. etc..." I've had that problem before in a previous version. I believe the solution then was to reinstall photoshop with the virusscanner disabled. I tried that, but it didn't work. I also tried the two solutions give by Adobe's faq, they didn't work either.

Any other ideas anyone?

This is the log file I found:

Hi

Have you tried disabling this option in preferences and restarted Photoshop, I was getting that error using the new Content Aware Fill and disabling that fixed it for me

Unchecking Enable Generator did not fix the problem for me.

Thanks Ged, that seemed to do the trick. At least the notification stopped.

Maybe it's not the most elegant solution, but then again, I don't think I really need Generator.

Thanks

I too have been getting the Generator error message when using the new Content Aware Fill in CC2019 so thanks for the tip about disabling it.

Same issue here.

Just wanted to mention that per the Adobe note that if you disable the Generator plugin it auto re-enables if you use File > Export As.

So "not a fix" for those of us who use File > Export As regularly.

Just had this problem and it is 1/8/2020--the Adobe link that provided info on dealing with it had two suggestions, neither of which worked (as well as missusing "its" [they had the contraction "it's", sheesh!]). Found your solution and it worked. Mucho thanks!

I have tried every suggestion in this thread and still getting the "problem w/Generator" error.  I must be over looking something.  Is there a sequence to the steps that I should be doing?  I unselect Generator in the preferences, close and uninstall PS CC 2019.  Reinstall and open.  Same problem.  Problem exists in legacy PDS that go back a few months.

The problem appeared on January 10.  At that time I was running CC 2020.  I did all the above steps, including unchecking Generator, uninstalling and reinstalling.  Same result.

I ran CC Cleaner, no joy--although the CC Cleaner doesn't appear to set up for post CS6, etc.  I downloaded the CC app and it said I have no plugins to display.

Maybe uninstall every Adobe app on the computer and reinstall?

It's 1/14/2020 and I have the same problem with generator. I, too, have tried all options listed. The checkbox re-checks itself and I cannot export any file at all. What is going on?

Me also!  When I try to create a png, I get the generator error, and the checkbox re-checks itself in Preferences/Plug-ins.  I also navigated to the Generator folder (Windows) and there's nothing in the folder.  I need my Photoshop -- please find a solution!!

I just want to add my voice to this complaint. I have the same issue on a fresh install on PS2020 and I cannot export anything. It is very annoying.

I've been chasing this all morning. Finally found the solution (for me anyway) - it was being caused by MalwareBytes.

It seems that MalwareBytes are aware of it and there's an easy work-around in the meantime:

There is an update today (1-22-20) for Photoshop, and the generator problem has been fixed.  Appreciate it, Adobe!

Whew, it's even worse.  When I opened up Photoshop right after I upgraded, there was no generator error prompt, and I could use the Quick Export as a png.

I had to reboot for a different reason, and when I opened Photoshop again, the generator error showed up again!

It appears that when I closed it, something got reset/unset, and when it launched fresh, the problem was back.

Ugh -- 10 minutes later -- I went and uninstalled Malwarebytes, and I now the Quick Export works.

Just for the record, there's no need to uninstall MalwareBytes - all you need to do if go into the settings and add an exclusion for node.exe in the Photoshop 2020 folder (just the exclude from ransomware option).

1/24/2020 adventure:  I just used the cloud app to update my Photoshop. So far it appears to have cured all generator error message concerns. I can use the program normally without needing the "Save for Web (Legacy)" option.

I closed PhotoShop and reopened it, and all remains normal.

I have not tried rebooting the laptop and see if something breaks. I also have not yet updated Malwarebytes for node.exe.  If the program starts failing again I will ask our IT dept to do that step. (And if it does fail again I'll post a new reply here.)

Adobe, it would have been more professional of you to post a note you are working on an upgrade solution instead of allowing your users (who pay for this software) to flounder on our own seeking answers. (Or was it our floundering answers that provided the solution for the upgrade? If so, do we get a thank you gift?)

Generator Error Update (problem appears to be solved.)

Downloaded and installed Photoshop 2020.
24 hrs later, added the Malwarebites exclusion as shown in the thread: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2020\node.exe.
Opened Photoshop.
Opened "export as"
No Generator errors.
Cautiously optimistic.  (I'd be fist-pumping if I didn't fear tempting Collorary 11 of Murphy's Law, which says, "Just when you think you have a solution, you don't.")
NOTE: unchecking Generator plug in still appears to be "session specific."  That is, when I uncheck Generator in preferences the box shows up checked the next time I open Photoshop.  But, the error is gone, so I'm not asking any more questions.  (Not fist pumping either.)

Major big kudos to all the Forum members who helped find this solution!

Just for the record, I don't think "unchecking Generator" is session
specific; I think it just turns back on when you try to use functionality
that uses it (like Export).

Which all seems rather odd, but that's the way it appears to be.

I don't know if this issue is fundamentally a Malware Bytes responsibility
or an Adobe one (ie "a false positive from MB" or "something not done best
practice by Adobe"), but I agree that making forward ground with issues
like this does seem to be more "miss" than "hit".

Would be nice to have a "status page" that we could check that gave a
summary of known issues - any work-arounds - and an ETA for resolution so
the same issue doesn't keep getting reported (the generator error has at
least 4 threads running in parallel)

This! Yes! Finally, a solution. I added Photoshop2020 folder to Malwarebytes Ransomware exclusion list and no generator error anymore. "Export As" works like a charm now. Thank you.
