Question

Ram for photoshop 2019

Hi all,

Going to get a new desktop computer built for me for Photoshop CC 2019. I've been told that 32GB ram is enough, but I was thinking 64GB. I only edit photographs, no video. Is 64Gb overkill?

Cheers.

Paul

It really depends on how you use it. If editing means a few colour adjustments then 32 GB is a lot.  If editing means large pixel size panoramas with hundreds of layers then even 64GB could be tight.

I have 64GB here and I rarely see Photoshop use max RAM. All works smoothly even with several apps open at once e.g. Lightroom, Photoshop, Substance and Blender.

Don't forget the importance of the scratch disk. Photoshop creates large scratch files even when not using the maximum RAM.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the info. My current system is I7, windows 7, 60Gb SSD, 2TB HDD, 16GB ram. Photoshop runs fine, although I do run out of memory for large panoramas, and there are issues with some extension windows (Raya pro/ Zone system express) disapearing when clicked on, which i believe is a video card issue. My current card is nvidia GT-240...not a great card.

So...I'm looking for something that'll last and is more than adequate for photoshop. I'll probably try 32Gb ram as it's another $500 for an extra 32GB. My new system will have 480Gb SSD and 2TB HDD. Should the scratch disk order be C drive (SSD) first and HDD second?

    Cheers,

    Paul
