Refine edge tool not working

Hi everyone. I'm trying to get the refine edge tool to work. I grouped some layers into a folder, masked it, then I click select and mask to refine edge. When I move my cursor around the edge pressing the mouse button to make my adjustments the tool does nothing! Absoulotly nothing! I do not have my refine edge brush set to "-", it is set to "+". I played with the radius and I even tried to enable Smart Edge and other features in the refine edge menu, then I reset the workspace, nothing. I even tried to work on individual layers in the goup but it still doesn't work....very aggravating. That's not all, my photoshop is so buggy, it keeps crashing and does weird thing since I installed the last update for Windows 11, I don't know what's wrong with it.

I've used this tool before and I never had a problem....Please help with any info or advice! thx!
