Question

relink smart object resizes image

I changed the name of a DNG file in windows that was used as a smart object in a photoshop file.  When I tried to relink to the newly renamed file, the image was pulled in but the image has been resized smaller.  The canvas is the proper size but now all my masks are incorrect.  The image was not changed, only the file name changed.  When I look at the newly named DNG image in LightRoom, it is the correct size (same as the PSD canvas).  This happens on all PSD images that have a mask associated with a layer.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

I now have some new information based on testing.  Please take a look and let me know if I am just dense or there is actually a problem...

Test Case 1: Open the BackYard_Orig.dng file using Photoshop

ACR asks me to open image and I do AS Smart Object

In Photoshop, I click on the Smart Object layer and Relink To File selecting BackYard_Copy.dng and click OK.

Result: The image is brought into Photoshop as a Smart Object filling the canvas correctly.

Test Case 2: From LightRoom, Open BackYard_Orig.dng as Smart Object in Photoshop

ACR is not brought up...just Photoshop with image and canvas at correct size

In Photoshop, I click on the Smart Object layer and Relink To File selecting BackYard_Copy.dng and click OK.

Result: The image is brought into Photoshop as a Smart Object but smaller than canvas with transparent pixels around image.

I don't know what to think but I almost always do work first in LightRoom and then open as Smart Object into Photoshop.

Has anyone else seen this?  Is this just somehow a user error?

All suggestions welcome.  I will be happy to provide the image files if someone wants to try on their machine.  They are relatively big (12 MB).

    Thanks.

Has the linked DNG RAW conversion ACR setting been change was cropping added.  Smart Object layers have an associated transform. This transform does not changed if the object is changed replaced.  If the link file image size has change the transform associated with the object will not work like the original object was transformed.  I'm a bit confused also I do not use LR you stated  DNG but also stated PSD in LR which doesn not support layers and a PSD File in not a RAW file but may have RAW smart Objects. In smart object layers. These may be larger, smaller or the same size as the PSD canvas and each smart object layer has and associated transform.

Thanks so much for your reply JJMack.  There have been crops to the DNG file BUT NOT since the photoshop image was saved.  There were no cropping or other edits on the DNG file after opening it in photoshop, just a rename of the file.  I have inserted screenshots and short descriptions representing the problem I am having.

In the example, I made a physical copy of the DNG file in windows so I know they are the same.  When I relink, the canvas remains the same size but the linked image is brought in smaller and messes up the mask that I created.

Thank you greatly for your time and suggestions.

This is the original DNG file edited in Photoshop CS 2015.5 as a smart object. An exposure layer has been added with mask over the grassy area to highlight the problem I am having. It was then saved as a PSD file.

NOTE: the image is 2332X2028 pixels with no transparent pixels around it in the canvas.

In the PSD file, I right clicked on the smart object and selected Relink To File. I selected an EXACT copy of the original file (made by Windows copy and paste). When photoshop reliked, you can see the image has been resized and transparent pixels have been added around the image to keep the canvas the same size as the original (see screenshot below). The mask has remained the same size as the canvas so it is now not usable with my image.

This screenshot shows that the canvas has remained the same size as originally set in the PSD file but the linked smart object has been reduced in size.

Take note of the PSD canvas size in pixel. Then dounle click on the smart object leyer content icon u=in the layers pallet. What is the canvas size of the temp work document that opens. What is the size of the object.
